Smartphones with a hole in the display to house the selfie camera are gaining traction as manufacturers look at new screen designs to eliminate the notch. Samsung kicked off the trend, with Huawei and sub-brand Honor following suit soon after. Now, HMD Global, the brand licensee for Nokia phones, is set to join the fray with a punch hole display smartphone of its own. In partnership with @OnLeaks, 91mobiles brings to you the first 5K renders and 360-degree video of the upcoming smartphone. While it is not yet certain what this model will be called, it's likely to be christened the Nokia 8.1 Plus.
As the images show, the Nokia 8.1 Plus will have a large display with a cut-out for the selfie camera on the top-left corner. Thanks to the punch hole design, the smartphone has thin bezels on the sides as well as the top, but the chin is a little thicker, with Nokia branding at the bottom. The display will measure 6.22-inch in size, similar to the upcoming Motorola P40 that will also have the punch-hole display. We can expect the screen to offer full HD+ resolution.
On the top, the Nokia 8.1 Plus will have a 3.5mm earphone socket (thankfully), while the left edge will be home to the volume rocker and power buttons. At the bottom, the USB Type-C port is sandwiched between the bottom-firing speakers on its left and a hole for the mic on the right. Moving to the back, you get a glass panel, with the Nokia logo in the middle and Android One branding towards the bottom. Above the company's logo is the fingerprint sensor, which could come as a letdown for those looking forward to a Nokia phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Towards the top of the Nokia 8.1 Plus is the dual rear camera setup with Zeiss lenses and dual LED flash. The handset will measure 156.9 x 76.2 x 7.9mm in size, though the thickness increases to 9.5mm if you take into account the protruding camera bump. With smartphone brands moving towards triple cameras and in-display fingerprint sensors for their premium products, it's unlikely that the Nokia 8.1 Plus will be a flagship product that takes on the likes of the Apple iPhone XS, Samsung Galaxy S10, etc. Instead, it could be positioned as a rival to the more affordable models, such as the OnePlus 6T.
