The OnePlus 15 launched only recently, but attention is already shifting to what comes next. According to a new leak from well-known Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, OnePlus may be preparing a major course correction with the OnePlus 16, and the camera appears to be at the centre of that rethink. OnePlus 15 introduced many firsts, including a new design, an in-house camera technology, a massive battery, and a big focus on performance. The general feedback was disappointment towards what was presumed to be an underwhelming camera setup for a flagship phone. That might change with the OnePlus 16.
The tipster claims that the OnePlus 16 will share its imaging hardware with the upcoming foldable, the Oppo Find N6, suggesting a return to a truly flagship-grade camera setup. Most notably, the Find N6 is tipped to feature a 200MP sensor as part of its rear camera system, which is most likely a periscope telephoto lens. The Find N6 itself is rumoured to pack a triple camera arrangement that includes two 50MP sensors and a third 200MP unit.
If this pans out, it would mark a sharp contrast to the OnePlus 15. While that phone launched in India in November with a triple 50MP setup, it drew criticism for using smaller sensors than earlier models. In our own review, we found that the OnePlus 15 delivers reliable point-and-shoot performance with good daylight shots and dramatic low-light photos, making it suitable for social media. However, its smaller sensors limit dynamic range and light intake, so images lack the depth and consistency seen on rivals like the iPhone 17 and OPPO Find X9 Pro.
For Indian buyers, this matters more than it might sound on paper. The OnePlus 15’s camera compromises might have deterred users from upgrading from older models.
There’s more brewing, too. An earlier leak hinted that OnePlus could experiment with a display combining extremely high resolution and an ultra-fast 240Hz refresh rate on one of its upcoming flagships. If the OnePlus 16 ends up pairing a 200MP telephoto camera with a cutting-edge display, it would signal that OnePlus is once again chasing headline features rather than incremental upgrades.
For OnePlus, which briefly stepped away from the sensor-size arms race with the OnePlus 15, returning with a 200MP shooter could be crucial to staying relevant in the premium segment among the likes of Samsung, Apple, Vivo and Xiaomi.
For Indian users considering whether to buy the OnePlus 15 now or wait, this leak adds a layer of caution. The OnePlus 15 still makes sense for those prioritising performance and software experience, but anyone upgrading mainly for photography may find it worth holding off to see how the OnePlus 16 shapes up or consider alternatives.
If the rumours hold, the next generation could finally bring back the camera prowess that long-time OnePlus fans have been missing. That said, it’s still too early for OnePlus 16 leaks, and we will be seeing more details emerge in the months to come.
