OnePlus 8 series could come with 5G connectivity, hints CEO Pete Lau

“OnePlus mentioned that it was looking at the suitability of a 5G smartphone in markets it is present and based on that, it would be planning its device features”

OnePlus 7T series was globally unveiled in London, and all the phones in the series come with only 4G LTE connectivity, despite the company launching OnePlus 7 Pro 5G variant earlier this year. However, now at the OnePlus 7T series event, OnePlus CEO hinted that the company would be focusing more on 5G going forward. There’s a possibility that all the phones launched in 2020 could have 5G as standard. In an interaction with media after the OnePlus 7T Pro launch in London, the company mentioned that it was looking at the suitability of a 5G smartphone in markets it is present. Based on that, it would be planning its device features.

There’s a possibility that all the phones launched in 2020 could have 5G as standard.

Speaking with media, Pete Lau said, “For 2020, a flagship trend is definitely that flagship devices have 5G. Speaking about 5G development in different countries, things are at various different stages. In India, for example, there may not be 5G availability next year. So again, this has to go back to looking at suitability for products in different regions.” This suggests that OnePlus might launch its 2020 devices with 5G in some markets, while others like India should get support as and when it rolls out. OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is currently exclusive to EE operator in the UK. On that note, Pete Lau back in August confirmed that OnePlus would launch its second 5G phone in 2019, presumably hinting at the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G.

OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition was also announced on the same stage, and the handset would go on sale in India on November 5th. After the OnePlus 6T, this is the second phone to come in collaboration with McLaren. When asked about if OnePlus would continue the partnership, Lau said, “We’re exploring what opportunities lie ahead of us, and when we have more news, we’ll be excited to share it with you.”
