Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon Reality Elite XR platform, launches Start toolkit for AI smart glasses
Qualcomm has announced its next-generation Snapdragon Reality Elite platform at Augmented World Expo (AWE), aimed at powering advanced mixed reality (MR), virtual reality (VR), and smart glasses experiences. Alongside the new XR chipset, the company also introduced Snapdragon Start, a toolkit designed to help brands develop AI-powered smart glasses faster.

The Snapdragon Reality Elite platform is positioned as Qualcomm’s most powerful XR solution yet. It is designed for both high-performance video-see-through (VST) headsets and lightweight optical-see-through (OST) smart glasses, reflecting the industry’s growing focus on mixed reality and AI-driven wearable devices.

A major highlight of the platform is its on-device AI performance of up to 48 TOPS, enabling support for large language models (LLMs) and vision AI models directly on XR devices. This allows features such as AI assistants, photorealistic avatars, real-time object generation, and improved contextual awareness without relying heavily on cloud processing.
Compared to the previous generation, Snapdragon Reality Elite offers up to 60 percent higher GPU performance, 30 percent faster CPU performance, and up to 160 percent better AI processing performance. Qualcomm says the platform can support displays with up to 4.4K resolution per eye at 90fps, delivering sharper visuals and smoother mixed reality experiences.
The new platform also promises up to 20 percent longer battery life and lower operating temperatures, which could result in lighter and more comfortable headsets for extended use. The chipset will power upcoming devices, including XREAL’s Project Aura and Play For Dream’s next-generation XR headset, with more products expected to follow.
Snapdragon Reality Elite signals the next step in premium XR hardware, bringing stronger AI capabilities, improved graphics, and better battery efficiency. While products powered by the platform are still on the way, buyers interested in mixed reality headsets or AI smart glasses may want to keep an eye on upcoming devices based on Qualcomm’s latest technology.

Qualcomm also introduced Snapdragon Start (Scalable Turnkey AI-Ready Toolkit). The program provides ready-made hardware modules, software tools, and AI integration support to help brands launch personal AI devices, such as smart glasses, more quickly. Eyewear company Inspecs is the first partner to join the initiative.
With Snapdragon Start, Qualcomm seems to be targeting eyewear brands, consumer electronics companies, and new entrants looking to launch AI-powered smart glasses without building the entire technology stack from scratch. By offering pre-built hardware modules, software tools, and AI integration support, the program aims to reduce development time and costs.
As demand for personal AI devices grows, Start could help bring a wider range of smart glasses to the market faster, giving consumers more choices across different price segments and use cases.
