Samsung Wallet UPI payments in India now support fingerprint authentication

Samsung has introduced a new feature for Samsung Wallet users in India that allows them to make UPI payments using their phone’s fingerprint sensor. With the feature, users can authorise UPI transactions of up to Rs 10,000 without entering their UPI PIN. Samsung Wallet joins a long line of payment apps in India that support biometric authentication like PhonePe, CRED, and Paytm. However, most of these apps have a transaction limit of Rs 5,000 using fingerprint or Face ID.

The new feature uses on-device biometric authentication to verify the user before completing an eligible UPI payment. This means users can simply authenticate with their registered fingerprint instead of entering their UPI PIN, making payments quicker and more convenient. Samsung says the feature can also help reduce transaction failures caused by incorrectly entered UPI PINs. Since the authentication happens on the device, users do not need to enter their PIN in public, which can also help protect it from being observed by others.

Samsung Wallet is protected by the in-house Knox security platform, with fingerprint recognition and encryption used to secure sensitive information. Data stored in the Wallet is kept in a secure environment designed to protect it against digital and physical attacks.

The Rs 10,000 limit applies to payments that can be authorised using the fingerprint-based method. UPI payments above the applicable limit will continue to require the usual authentication process.

Beyond UPI payments, Samsung Wallet supports contactless payments using tokenised credit and debit cards, utility bill payments, and the storage of digital keys, boarding passes, tickets, and ID cards.

The new fingerprint authentication makes Samsung Wallet more convenient for frequent UPI transactions. It also adds another layer of convenience compared with the traditional UPI PIN-based process. Galaxy users who already use Samsung Wallet for cards, tickets, or other digital credentials can benefit more, as they can now handle eligible UPI payments without entering a PIN each time.

Another advantage that Samsung Wallet has is the transaction limit set at Rs 10,000, which is more than what other apps provide. If you’re a Galaxy user making frequent UPI payments, especially those above Rs 5,000, this update makes Samsung Wallet a compelling option to switch to immediately.
