WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to recharge prepaid mobile numbers without leaving the app. The rollout, announced this week, is being carried out in phases and will reach Android and iOS users nationwide over the coming weeks. The feature is powered through a partnership with PayU, and supports major telecom operators including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea.
With this new feature, WhatsApp seems to be attempting to consolidate everyday digital tasks such as messaging, payments, ticketing, and now recharges, into a single interface.
While the move strengthens WhatsApp’s utility, it is not entering uncharted territory. Apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm have long offered mobile recharge services alongside bill payments, insurance, and financial products. What differentiates WhatsApp is that it’s a messaging app and has a massive user base in India, which could make transactions feel more seamless and quick. WhatsApp already offers support for UPI transfers and metro ticketing in select cities, gradually positioning the app as a broader financial services hub.
How to recharge via WhatsApp
The recharge process is straightforward: users tap the ₹ icon, which is located on top of the home screen. Here, you can access all of WhatsApp’s financial features like paying someone through UPI, scannina QR code for payments, checking your account balance, and purchasing metro tickets. When the feature is live, it should appear here. Then you can follow these steps:
- Select Mobile Prepaid Recharge
- Enter a number, pick a plan
- Pay via UPI, debit card, or credit card
- A confirmation screen follows, and transaction history is stored within the payments section.
For WhatsApp users, the appeal lies in convenience rather than novelty. If you already rely on WhatsApp daily, recharging within the same app removes friction. However, there are a few practical considerations. WhatsApp’s recharge interface may feel more basic in comparison to other apps, which show a full-fledged layout with all the plans and offers. However, it’s still a quick and seamless way to get a recharge done for yourself or your family and friends.
