Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max launching this week in China with secondary displays and new design
Xiaomi is gearing up to launch its next major flagship lineup, the Xiaomi 17 series, in China on September 25th. The company has confirmed the date through an official Weibo post, while also giving fans a first look at the design of the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and the top-end Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. This time around, Xiaomi is ditching the “Ultra” branding in favour of the Pro Max tag, clearly positioning its lineup against Apple’s latest iPhone 17 range, which also includes a Pro Max model. Xiaomi is also skipping the ’16’ moniker and jumping straight to ’17’ for its flagship lineup.
Not only the naming scheme, but also the design of the Xiaomi 17 series, is very similar to the new iPhone 17 lineup. The vanilla Xiaomi 17 sports a sleek rectangular camera module with rounded edges in the top-left corner. At the same time, the Pro and Pro Max models stand out with their “Magic Back Screen”, a secondary display built into the rear camera module. This mini display won’t just show the time or notifications but will also support custom themes and animations, adding both style and function. This design is akin to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models, but Xiaomi adds a twist with a secondary screen. Xiaomi has previously experimented with secondary displays, as seen in the Mi 11 Ultra, which features a small screen on the back. Years later, the technology seems much more refined.

For users, this means you’re getting a compact yet premium design that might feel more pocket-friendly than the oversized flagships we’re used to. The Magic Back Screen could be handy for quick glances at notifications or even framing selfies, though whether it becomes a daily-use feature or just a gimmick will depend on how Xiaomi executes this.
The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is confirmed to support 100W wired fast charging and pack an innovative L-shaped battery with 16 percent ultra-high silicon content for greater energy density. Xiaomi claims the phone can charge from 0 to 100 percent in just 40 minutes. The battery capacity hasn’t been revealed yet. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max will also feature a “super pixels” small-sized 2K OLED flat display that uses a full-RGB pixel layout with independently arranged pixels, designed to eliminate the need for pixel pooling and deliver sharper visuals. Its 2K display is also said to use up to 26 percent less energy than a regular 2K display.
The vanilla Xiaomi 17 is confirmed to feature a 6.3-inch flat display with ultra-elliptical R-angle corners and a 19.6:9 aspect ratio. It will feature ultra-narrow 1.18mm bezels, weigh just 191g, and sport a sleek design with a monochromatic glass lens and a four-micro-curved middle frame. It’s also worth mentioning that the Xiaomi 17 Pro will also feature the same display size as the Xiaomi 17.
Xiaomi’s focus on ultra-fast charging and compact flagship design fits into a broader industry trend. Brands like Realme and iQOO are also pushing charging speeds past 100W, while Apple and Samsung continue to stay conservative in this area. At the same time, a shift towards smaller premium devices can be seen with the likes of the OnePlus 13s and Vivo X200 FE having launched in recent months.
All three Xiaomi 17 phones are expected to run on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. They’re also confirmed to launch with HyperOS 3 with Android 16. As always, Xiaomi is continuing its partnership with Leica for the cameras, so photography is expected to be a big highlight once again.
Pre-reservations for the Xiaomi 17 series are already live in China. Xiaomi brings its flagship in India too, so we’re expecting at least two models from the Xiaomi 17 series here. Judging by the previous launch, it could be the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max debuting here to succeed the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra.
