Wide-screen smartphones could be the new trend as more brands are experimenting with this design. 2026 saw the rise of wide-screen foldables with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, iPhone Duo, and Xiaomi 18 Fold. This form factor could soon become mainstream, judging by the recent leaks. Xiaomi appears to be one of those brands experimenting with a wide-screen slab smartphone.
Xiaomi tests wide-screen phone
A new post by tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo talks about an Android smartphone with a wide, straight design being tested. This smartphone is also said to feature a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. DCS doesn’t reveal which brand it is, but comments suggest the tipster is talking about Xiaomi.
A wide-screen smartphone would be different from the regular ones, as the aspect ratio would be wider. It would be more boxy too in terms of design, as opposed to the tall form factor we’re used to seeing. This form factor would be similar to wide foldables like the Xiaomi 18 Fold, but on a slab smartphone. The wider display design makes it easier to multitask, type, read, and more.

Huawei already has the Pura X View, which is the perfect example of a wide-screen phone. It has a wide, compact form factor with the display featuring a 16:9.5 aspect ratio. However, the Huawei Pura X View’s availability is limited to China. Since Xiaomi is quite active globally, especially in India, it would have an advantage with a bigger market.
Not just Xiaomi, OPPO is also rumoured to be working on a wide-screen smartphone with a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio. This means that we might be seeing wide-screen phones as the latest trend in the smartphone industry going forward.
DCS has only leaked early information, with no details on the phone’s specifications. We would have to wait for more leaks to understand what Xiaomi is planning for its wide-screen phone. But if this form factor is something that interests you, it could be worth waiting for.
