With the iPhone 15, Apple used what it calls ‘Ceramic Shield’, claiming it was tougher than most other glass used on smartphones. The brand is now rumoured to use an even tougher glass on the iPhone 17 series that should arrive sometime in 2025. Not only will the iPhone 17 feature a more durable glass but it will also be more anti-reflective, much like the glass on the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s display.
iPhone 17 anti-reflective display details
- The outer glass of the iPhone 17 series will reportedly be made of a super-hard AR layer, according to Chinese Weibo leaker Instant Digital.
- The roughly translated text of the Weibo post says that the iPhone 17 series will be “more scratch-resistant” than you can think.
- It adds that Apple has bought coating equipment for billions in Japan but it is now being handed over to China’s supply chain. This will however not be used for the iPhone 16 series that is expected to launch later this year, and instead debut on the iPhone 17.
The iPhone 15 currently has the toughest glass on any iPhone yet, as per the company. The Ceramic Shield it uses is a glass-ceramic material Corning developed in collaboration with Apple. It looks like this is going to get an upgrade with the iPhone 17 series next year. There’s no word on the durability of the iPhone 16 though, and it might just come with the same protective glass as the iPhone 15.
When it comes to Corning’s tough glasses for smartphones, the Galaxy S24 Ultra stands out for its Gorilla Glass Armor. This glass panel is said to reduce reflections by 75 percent and also offers 4x more scratch resistance than other smartphone glasses.
Corning might be developing something similar for Apple or it could use Gorilla Glass Armor on the iPhone 17 too. It’s still too early though since the iPhone 17 is due next year. But we should get to know more about it soon.
