Motorola has expanded its Edge 70 lineup rapidly this year, launching the Edge 70, Edge 70 Fusion, Edge 70 Pro, Edge 70 Pro+, and now the Edge 70 Max. While each model targets a different segment, the Edge 70 Max appears to be the company’s most ambitious offering yet. The handset shifts the spotlight from lifestyle-centric offerings to performance.
The Motorola Edge 70 Max is the OEM’s first gaming-focussed smartphone, packing flagship-grade hardware, support for high-frame-rate gaming, and a dedicated cooling system to sustain performance during extended gaming sessions. Beyond gaming, the smartphone also brings a handful of noteworthy features that help it stand out in the premium segment.
After spending some time with the device, here are my first impressions of the Motorola Edge 70 Max, which is priced in India starting at Rs 54,999.
Table of Contents
The Edge 70 Max brings subtle refinements to Motorola’s design language. Instead of the curved edges seen on previous Edge smartphones, the handset adopts flat sides, improving ergonomics while reducing accidental touches during gaming. Importantly, this change doesn’t come at the expense of the premium look and feel the Edge series is known for. Rather than embracing the flashy RGB lights and aggressive styling commonly associated with gaming phones, the Edge 70 Max opts for a clean, understated design that should appeal to a wider audience.
The phone features an aluminium frame with Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protection on both the front and back, lending it a premium in-hand feel while adding to its durability. It is also IP69-rated for dust and water resistance, offering protection against the elements. Additionally, the handset carries MIL-STD-810H certification, which means it has been tested to withstand minor drops and harsh environmental conditions.
While all that is fine, the Motorola Edge 70 Max may feel bulky to some users. The handset weighs over 221 grams, which isn’t unusual for a performance-focused smartphone, and is also thicker (8.29mm) than other models in the Edge lineup, making it slightly less comfortable to handle. If you’re upgrading from an older Motorola smartphone, the added weight and thickness are likely to be among the first things you’ll notice.
Other aspects of the phone include a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer, sandwiched between the speaker grille and the SIM tray. The Edge 70 Max also features a secondary speaker at the top, hidden behind the earpiece, which contributes to a stereo speaker setup. The handset features an in-display fingerprint scanner for security and a physical key, separate from the volume rocker and power button, on the left spine for motoAI features.
We received the smartphone in Aqua Gray, though it is also available in two other colour options: Dark Shadow and Ice Melt.
While the Motorola Edge 70 Max is a gaming-focused smartphone, it is not just limited to that. The handset features several interesting specifications that might make it an appealing buy for a wide range of users.
Display
On the front, the Edge 70 Max sports a 6.8-inch 10-bit AMOLED display with the segment’s first QHD+ (1,440 x 3,168p) resolution for sharp and vibrant visuals and up to 7,000 nits to improve legibility outdoors in harsh sunlight. Whether you’re streaming videos, browsing social media, or editing photos, the high-resolution panel should deliver a pleasing viewing experience both indoors and outdoors. The display also delivers up to a 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, a 360Hz touch sampling rate, water touch, and razor-thin bezels. It is said to have a screen-to-body ratio of 96.80 percent.
Performance
The Motorola Edge 70 Max is powered by Qualcomm’s sub-flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC, paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.1 storage. The handset also features Motorola’s ArcticMesh cooling system with a 5,500mm2 vapour chamber, designed to keep thermals in check and minimise performance throttling.
For gamers, the Edge 70 Max supports up to 120fps gameplay in BGMI and Call of Duty: Mobile, promising a smooth gaming experience. It will be interesting to see how consistently the phone can sustain these frame rates under prolonged workloads. On paper, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 appears more than capable, as demonstrated by devices such as the OnePlus 15R and iQOO 15R. Ultimately, it will come down to how well Motorola has optimised the Edge 70 Max to deliver sustained performance under demanding loads.
Software
Software-wise, the Motorola Edge 70 Max runs Android 16-based HelloUI out of the box. There are plenty of motoAI features to offer; however, the support seems limited to just 3 major OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates. Rival Android smartphones in this segment now offer up to 6 years of software updates. Motorola’s Signature smartphone, which is selling at Rs 59,999, promises seven years of major OS and security updates.
Battery
The Motorola Edge 70 Max is backed by a 7,100mAh battery, which is claimed to offer up to 58 hours of usage. This is backed by 90W TurboPower fast wired charging and 5W reverse wired charging. In addition, you get 25W magnetic wireless charging with Qi 2.2. It is perhaps the most interesting addition to the smartphone, making it one of the very few Android smartphones to offer the feature in India. Beyond wireless charging, users can attach compatible magnetic accessories, bringing an iPhone-like ecosystem experience to Android.
Cameras
In the camera department, the Edge 70 Max features a 50MP Sony LYTIA 710 primary sensor with OIS, accompanied by an 8MP ultrawide lens. However, it misses out on a dedicated telephoto camera for optical zoom, a feature offered by its sibling, the Edge 70 Pro+. That said, since the Edge 70 Max is a gaming-focused smartphone, the absence of a telephoto sensor seems intentional.
For selfies and video calls, the Edge 70 Max features a 32MP front-facing camera. We will be putting its cameras, along with every other aspect of the smartphone, through their paces in our full review, so stay tuned.
The Motorola Edge 70 Max appears to be more than just another smartphone. With gaming-focused features, a refined design, a high-quality display, and magnetic wireless charging, it stands out in a crowded premium smartphone market. Whether these additions translate into a better overall experience is something we’ll evaluate in our full review, including detailed gaming, camera, battery, and performance testing.
