The Redmi Note 17 delivers on its core promises: a big bright AMOLED display, excellent battery life, and the segment’s best software support. The Redmi Note 17 looks and feels quite different from the slimmer Note 15 (review) and Note 14 (review) models. Those phones were lighter and more compact, with slimmer, curved bodies and smaller screens. The Note 17, on the other hand, is taller and heavier at around 225g, mainly because of the much bigger battery and the almost 7‑inch display.
The back panel has soft curves into the frame, and the matte finish helps keep fingerprints in check, but you still feel the size when you pick it up. If you are used to thinner phones, this phone will take some time getting used to. One‑handed use is also a bit harder, especially if you have smaller hands, and you will probably end up using both hands more often with this phone.

The Redmi Note 17 uses a 6.99‑inch FHD+ AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. That’s almost tablet‑sized, and you really feel how big it is when you first boot it up. The colours look pretty good, contrast is good, and most content ends up looking lively on this screen. Xiaomi claims 1,800 nits of peak brightness, and in my use, outdoor visibility has been decent enough that I didn’t struggle too much outdoors.
I do have a few issues with the visual side of things, though. On YouTube, you’re limited to 1080p playback with no HDR support, so you can’t bump quality higher even if your connection allows it. The audio setup is also a little on the basic side of things. You only get a single down‑firing mono speaker. It gets reasonably loud, and the sound is fine for casual use, but it doesn’t offer the depth or stereo separation some rivals manage with dual speakers. I’ve usually liked Xiaomi’s speaker tuning on past phones, so this feels like a small step back, especially on a phone with this big a battery.
You can work around most of these limits, however, by using a good pair of earphones or earbuds. If you mainly watch content with headphones on, the Note 17’s display will still serve you well, even if the overall multimedia experience could have been better.
The Redmi Note 17’s 50MP AI rear camera takes clean, natural-looking photos in daylight, with colours and contrast that stay true to the scene. You get balanced images that look good for everyday sharing, though fine detail and edge sharpness are modest if you zoom in. The portrait shots come out with accurate skin tones and good edge detection, especially around hair, but you’ll notice some noise and softness up close.
In low light, the lack of OIS and a smaller sensor means the camera struggles to hold detail, often smoothing textures and showing visible noise. The colours look pleasant and not oversaturated, but you miss out on versatility without an ultrawide lens or OIS.
The phone’s video capabilities max out at 1080p at 30fps, with no 4K option, which feels low for this day and age but works fine for casual clips. The 8MP selfie camera is decent for calls and social posts, though it adds a slight red tinge to skin and loses detail, so it’s best in good light.

Daylight
Both the Redmi Note 17 and Realme P4 Power output very similar results in daylight scenarios. Their colour profiles and contrast levels are nearly identical, although the Redmi’s image is closer to the actual scene. In terms of detail and sharpness, however, the P4 Power has a definitive lead against its competitor.
Portrait
The colour science in both phones is once again pretty close in portrait shots. The Redmi Note 17, however, is once again slightly better than the P4 Power in terms of accuracy.

In titles like BGMI and Call of Duty: Mobile, it can hold around 40–45fps on balanced/medium settings, while the lowest resolutions easily support up to 60fps. When you push graphics to higher presets, the frame rate drops and you start to see stutter, so it’s clearly happier at moderate settings.
The upside is that the phone stays decently cool and doesn’t throttle badly over a 30–40 minute session. This is likely due to the big 10,416mm2 vapour chamber, which helps it feel consistent even if it’s not very fast. In short, the Note 17 is fine for casual games and everyday use, but it’s not the device you buy for competitive gaming.
The Redmi Note 17 runs HyperOS 3 based on Android 16, and the software feels fairly well-tuned for an entry-level chipset. You don’t get every customisation option you see on Xiaomi’s more expensive phones, but there’s still enough here to tweak the home screen, icons, and basic layout to your liking. I love that Note 17 continues to support the IR blaster and Mi Remote app, which I feel is an underrated feature that’s becoming less commonplace across devices.
There are quite a few pre-installed apps out of the box, but the good part is that most of them can be uninstalled or disabled. General navigation runs at 120Hz, and most apps scroll smoothly, but the phone does feel a bit laggy in day-to-day use, and heavy usage makes it more observable. The big advantage you get on the software side is the promise of four major OS updates and six years of security patches. In this price segment, that’s about as good as it gets, and it should help the Note 17 stay relevant for a long time.
Battery life on the Redmi Note 17 is pretty exceptional, even if the benchmark numbers don’t fully reflect it. In PCMark, the phone managed a little over 16 hours on a full charge, which is decent for an 8,000mAh battery but a bit lower than what I was expecting from a capacity this big.
In actual use, however, the phone only dropped 4 percent after an hour of gaming and another 4 percent after an hour of streaming video. That’s excellent optimisation and better than what I’ve seen on most phones in this price bracket.

You also get reverse wired charging, which is genuinely handy for topping up smaller devices like your earbuds, smartwatch, or even another phone in a pinch. The Redmi Note 17 nails the aspect it’s so heavily advertised around, so if battery life is your main priority, you’ll never worry about that with this device.
Compared to rivals, phones like the Realme P4 Power and Motorola Edge 70 Fusion feel more well-rounded smartphones, especially in performance and camera quality. The Realme P4 Power (review) is better across all major aspects. It comes with a much bigger battery and features a high-resolution display, a more capable processor, and superior durability.
Although it’s important to keep in mind that the phone arrived at a time when the RAM situation wasn’t so difficult. Other peers like the Motorola Edge 70 Fusion (review) may not have the sheer battery capacity or software support, but it does have a more holistic profile with a better camera setup (including an ultrawide lens) and higher performance output.
Starting at Rs 27,999 for the 6GB+128GB variant and Rs 29,999 for the 8GB+128GB variant, the Redmi Note 17 comes in with some clear promises. It aims to give you a big, good-looking AMOLED display, very strong battery life, and long-term software support. On those points, it mostly delivers. The screen is large, smooth, and bright enough outdoors, the 8,000mAh battery easily gets through busy days, and the promise of four OS updates and six years of security patches is the best you’ll find in this segment right now.
So what’s the catch, you’ll ask? Well, there are a few. The single speaker works, but just about, so people who prefer listening straight from the phone may miss stereo output. Performance is fine for everyday tasks like calls, chats, social media, and streaming, but the phone clearly isn’t meant for heavy gaming or multitasking. The camera setup is also more suited to simple, day-to-day photos than anything more demanding.
In the end, the Redmi Note 17 feels like a product shaped by its time: it sticks to what it promises: endurance, screen, and software support.
