When the film was released, director Mathieu Kassovitz called it a "bad episode of 24 (2001)." In an interview with amctv.com, Kassovitz said that 20th Century Fox interfered throughout production, and he never had a chance to shoot a scene the way it was scripted, or the way he wanted it to be.
The round Sigil Tattoo seen on Vin Diesel's neck is known as "The Gate of the Necronomicon" and is protective, symbolizing Man, the Creator and The Watchers.
According to Mathieu Kassovitz, Vin Diesel was astounded at how much the film had been shortened. Having just completed production of Fast & Furious (2009), he had not seen a cut of the film in six months. He joked, "Am I even in the movie any more, or am I on the cutting room floor?"
The film had to be bailed out by the studio's insurance company, after running over-budget and falling significantly behind schedule.
Vin Diesel was cast by 20th Century Fox, against Mathieu Kassovitz's wishes.
"Sister Rebeka: Aurora could speak when she was two years old. Toorop: Oh, a lot of kids speak at two. Sister Rebeka: Not 19 different languages."
"[first lines] Toorop: [voice-over] Save the planet. Whenever I've read that bumper sticker I've had to laugh. Save the planet. What for? And for what, ourselves? What about God, can He help us? I don't think so. God gave us what we have to see how we use it. Shit, rats in a cage would have done it better. Life's a bitch and then you die - bumper sticker philosophy. Yeah, right. Sometimes, you get a second chance."
