Frito Lay informed the producers of this film that the story was false in 2019. But they went ahead with the film anyway.
The real Richard and Judy Montañez briefly appear at 1:22:20 in the film during the montage of giving away bags of Flamin' Hot Cheetos. The stars who portray them, Jesse Garcia and Annie Gonzalez, are in a park and approach a man in a navy blue plaid shirt and a blonde woman wearing a white sleeveless blouse who are part of a family picnic party. The actor Richard tells the real Richard, "Hey! We just made these. They're Cheetos with chile on them. You gotta try 'em." The real Richard asks, "Are you serious?" Actor Richard replies, "Yeah, they're crazy!" Then actor Judy says, "Your kids are gonna love 'em," to which the real Judy says, "Thank you! Ohhh."
According to the LA Times and Frito Lay this film is more a work of fiction as Mr. Montañez was NOT actually involved in the creation of the Flamin' Hot brand. LA Times article states that "Flamin' Hots were created by a team of hotshot snack food professionals starting in 1989, in the corporate offices of Frito-Lay's headquarters in Plano, Texas. The new product was designed to compete with spicy snacks sold in the inner-city mini-marts of the Midwest. A junior employee with a freshly minted MBA named Lynne Greenfeld got the assignment to develop the brand - she came up with the Flamin' Hot name and shepherded the line into existence." making this film a work of fiction rather than a biopic.
