The story was originally conceived in 2009 by Jim Towns as a black box theater play, with the three girl characters all painted white and wearing Kabuki masks.

Jim Towns originally approached Scott Frazelle only to ask if the film could use his Ford truck as a picture vehicle. Frazelle would end up helping re-write the screenplay and producing the film.
The film's opening bedroom scene between Sirah and Tommy was the very last scene shot during principal photography, at the end of a 14 hour day. At the last minute the director turned off all the lights set up in the room, choosing to shoot the scene with the characters in silhouette from the outside lights.
"Sirah: It's so easy for you, isn't it? You get to decide who deserves to live and who deserves to die? Teig: It's getting easier."
