Govinda, who had shot scenes for the film before the script was complete, was cut from the film. Jackie Shroff and Amitabh Bachchan were both considered to replace him. However, after rewrites and redeveloping the characters Saswata Chatterjee of Kahaani fame finally bagged the role.
The film was announced in 2012, and started to shoot in 2014 with a tentative release date of November 2015. However by 2015, only ten days had been shot. The film was delayed due to many reasons, notably the breakup of the then romantically involved lead actors. Ranbir Kapoor also took time to film Bombay Velvet (2015). Additionally, Anurag Basu revealed that after making Barfi! (2012), he wanted to spend time with his family. The film was delayed for so long, that Ranbir Kapoor considered shelving it.
