Rotten TomatoesThose who have just heard of this movie may believe it is a straightforward narrative of a guy reconnecting with his roots. That is, but with its simplicity comes a lot of baggage. Swades covers a lot of ground in just three and a half hours. This is absolutely worth seeing. The cinematography is controlled, SRK has performed incredibly well after a long period of time, and the film is underpinned by a naive yet endearing idealism. Perhaps it should have been a little shorter, and more precise editing would have benefited. Unrepentant in its representation of poverty and almost childish in its plea to NRIs and India's working class to recognize hardship and try to take action. Gowarikar put his heart and soul into the making of this film; the scenes with the family unable to pay their land rentals and the waterboy were both beautiful and moving. My guess is that, regardless of BO's destiny, this is an essential film that will be discussed for years to come.

For authenticity, Ashutosh Gowariker shot a scene at Launch Pad 39A, at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. This is the first Indian film to actually be shot inside the NASA research center.
Mohan Bhargava is working on a rainfall monitoring satellite known as the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), which is lifted into an orbit aboard a Space Shuttle. The GPM is an actual NASA mission, was launched in 2014.
Since the making of the film was so close to Shahrukh's heart, he could not bear to see it end and hence he never saw the film. "Making Swades was such an emotionally overwhelming experience that I never saw the finished product. Didn't want the feeling to end." - Shahrukh Khan
The Book "BAPU KUTI" which firstly inspired Ashutosh Gowarikar about the idea of Movie "Swades" and is acknowledged in the starting of the movie is shown in the bookstore scene when Sharukh Khan was at the counter billing books for Gayatri Joshi.
Swades is mostly based on life story of Ravikuchimanchi and Aravinda a couple who returned to India and They actually built a mini reservoir and Pedal power in the village of Bilagaon , Maharashtra.
"Mohan Bhargav: I'm only speaking of things I've experienced while living here. And that is that we keep fighting among ourselves when we must fight against illiteracy, over-population & corruption. Everyday, in our streets & homes, each one of us keeps saying their is no future of this country. This country is on the path of destruction. If we keep saying this, we will one day actually land up there. You'll need to do something about this. You too! Not just the members of the Panchayat but everyone in the village. You're blaming Panchayat for your problems. But when you step into their shoes, you'll do the same thing. This applies to me too. The dalits blame the brahmins and brahmins claim that their piety is despoiled by the dalits. The blacksmith & potter blame the moneylender. The land owners blame the peasants, but they don't give them their rights. In what way are we great then? If we have problems in the village, we point our finger at the State and the State at someone else. We all are finding fault with each other! But the true fact is that we're all to be blamed. Because the problem is us. Me, you, all of us... Vishwa: Are you out of your mind! What are you saying? Mohan Bhargav: All I know is that a weaver who changed his occupation by becoming a farmer can't even feed his family or give his children even some basic education. He can only watch his kids die of malnutrition. [Mohan leaves]"
"Fatima Bi: Apne hi paani me mil jaana barf ka muqqadar hota hai."
