Trivia

The Adderall Diaries is based on a "true-crime memoir" book of the same name by Stephen Elliott. The underlying true crime is the Hans Reiser murder case.

Stephen Elliott (played by James Franco) reviewed the film negatively, stating that the final result had little in common with his memoir and wondering "why calling the character Stephen Elliott was necessary." Stephen Elliott, born December 3, 1971, is an American writer, editor, and filmmaker living in Los Angeles who has written and published seven books and directed two films.

The movie is based on Hans Reiser (true story) and Hans is an American computer programmer, entrepreneur, and convicted murderer. In April 2008, Hans Reiser was convicted of the first-degree murder of his wife, Nina Reiser, who disappeared in September 2006. He subsequently pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder, as part of a settlement agreement that included disclosing the location of his wife's body, which he revealed to be in a shallow grave near the couple's home.

Second film James Franco has starred in that was released by A24, his first one was (Spring Breakers)

The film cast includes three Oscar nominees: Ed Harris, James Franco, and Timothée Chalamet.

Popular Dialogues

"[last lines] Stephen Elliott: You remember when you taught me to drive? I was 14. You let me drive out to Warren park in a '69 mustang. I loved that car. You used to take me out, let me drive. I remember feelin' so happy and free, full of hope and potential. Neil Elliott: I don't know why you always told people I taught you to drive in the mustang. It was a red 1968 Oldsmobile Delmont convertible, in Warren park in the parkin' lot. You were belligerent, and you were a terrible driver. So we only did it once. Stephen Elliott: Wanna go for a drive? I don't wanna see you for an hour. Neil Elliott: Nah, we'd just argue. Stephen Elliott: Fine. Then we'll just go. We'll agree not to talk. It doesn't matter. None of it matters. Neil Elliott: All right. You gotta help me up here. Help your old dad get up..."
