With its production budget of $26 million, this is Woody Allen's most expensive film.
Tom Hanks and Jack Nicholson both turned down the role of C.W. Briggs. So Woody Allen decided to play the role himself.
According to Woody Allen, this is one of his worst movies, because he's leading it. He couldn't find anyone to play the lead, and had to do it himself, even though he felt he wasn't a good fit for the part.
Woody Allen is very secretive with his scripts when he is working. Helen Hunt was allowed to read the entire script when she was offered the part, but she had to read it in one sitting and then give it back to the courier who was waiting to take it back.
When Woody Allen says his "little man" is telling him something is fishy about a jewel robbery and insurance claim, he's referencing Edward G. Robinson in Double Indemnity (1944). Robinson played an insurance executive whose "little man" always tipped him off to insurance fraud.
"Chris: You know, there's a word for people who think everyone is conspiring against them. C.W.: I know, perceptive."
"C.W.: I found the Picasso. It wasn't easy. I was looking for a woman with a guitar and it was all cubes. It took me two hours to find her nose."
