The closing credits offer an apology that states: "With apologies to the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson."
The opening sequence of the movie is inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes story "The Red-Headed League". In the story, Sherlock Holmes captures John Clay and his accomplice, Archie. John Clay even calls out at one point, "Jump, Archie, or swing for it!"
Sir Michael Caine and Sir Ben Kingsley once stated that these were the exact roles they wanted to play in the exact way they did.
Peter Cook (Norman Greenhough), the editor of The Strand Magazine, in which Dr. Watson (Sir Ben Kingsley)'s accounts of the Sherlock Holmes (Sir Michael Caine) cases appear, actually played Sherlock Holmes in another Sherlock Holmes comedy spoof movie, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1978), where Dudley Moore played Dr. Watson.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was not billed in the credits for characters for this movie, but he did receive a joke apology in the closing titles.
"Holmes: It wasn't YOU he tried to kill! Watson: Think man, think... Who was SUPPOSED to be in that room? Holmes: That's right! You were! Watson: Moriarty knows... I'm am the only match for his evil genius. Holmes: You mean he's not trying to kill me? Watson: Of course not. He knows you're an idiot. Holmes: Oh, thank God."
"Holmes: I'm reminded of the curious case of the Manchurian Mambo... Watson: Holmes, could I have a word? Holmes: Yes, what is it? Watson: I believe that was the Manchurian Mamba. Holmes: Mambo, mamba. What's the difference? Watson: Well, very little, except that one is a deadly, poisonous snake, while the other is a rather festive Carribean dance. Holmes: It was a night like any other, when suddenly a knock came at the door. I opened it, and there were these Manchurians, doing a rather festive Carribean dance..."
