Apple’s first iPhones, iPods and Macs are often auctioned with people paying thousands of dollars for these vintage devices. An original iPhone recently broke the record by selling for $158,644 (Rs 1,30,28,083 approx). This particular iPhone was sealed, and it was the 4GB variant that was rare even during its original release as it was available in limited quantity.

Sealed original iPhone 4GB auctioned 

The estimated value of this original iPhone 4GB model was up to $100,000 (Rs 82,11,850 approx) during the start of the auction. It was hosted by LCG Auctions who expected the iPhone to sell between $50,000 (Rs 41,05,925) and $100,000. The bidding started with $10,000 on June 30th, and it managed to go up to around $41,776 (Rs 34,30,624 approx) on July 13th.

The auction saw a sudden increase yesterday with bidding quickly jumping to $108,356 within the final hours, and finally closing at $158,644. The original iPhone 4GB model was sold for a total of $190,372 (Rs 1,56,33,253 approx) which most likely includes taxes. It’s a sealed item so you get the iPhone in the original box which features a picture of the iPhone with all the app icons. 

Apple launched the 4GB variant of the original iPhone back in 2007, and it was priced at $499. It was unveiled by the late Steve Jobs at MacWorld San Francisco. With the auctioned price, the value of this iPhone rose around 318 times more than its original price. LCG Auctions describes the 4GB iPhone model as the “Holy Grail” among iPhone collectors. “Its extreme scarcity is directly related to its limited production,” LGC Auctions explained in its website.

  • It came in three storage variants of 4GB, 8GB and 16GB.
