iPhones have been carrying the Lightning port since iPhone 5. This could soon change as there are reports and leaks indicating that Apple may finally bid farewell to its proprietary port and instead adopt USB Type-C for the upcoming iPhone 15 series. But turns out, along with 2023’s iPhone models, a couple of older iPhones may also get remade and have USB-C ports fitted in place of Lightning ports.
Older iPhones may get USB-C charging port
Along with the iPhone 15 models, Apple may bring USB-C charging ports to several older iPhones. This was revealed by Aaron on X (formerly Twitter) who is an Apple developer and writer. While analysing the tvOS 17 beta 5 code, Aaron found two iPhone models which were previously not present in the earlier beta builds. Furthermore, these two models are said to be different from the four iPhone 15 references found in older tvOS software versions.
It is speculated that the new iPhone models, iPhone14,1 and iPhone14,9 found in the software are the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus but with USB-C charging ports.
Reason behind providing USB-C port to older iPhones
At this point in time, there’s no certainty that Apple will remake older iPhones and offer Type-C instead of Lightning ports. However, if the report turns out to be true, Apple’s decision could make sense in order to align with European Union’s regulations to provide USB-C ports on all devices sold in the region. A law was passed in 2020 mandating companies to implement Type-C ports.
If the reports are to anything go by, the sole reason the Cupertino giant is shifting to USB-C ports starting with the iPhone 15 series in the first place is because of the EU’s strict rules and orders.
