God of War Ragnarok is scheduled to release for PS5 and PS4 sometime in 2022. The game was initially supposed to launch in 2021, but it got delayed. Sony Santa Monica Studio hasn’t revealed the exact date yet, but it has reiterated that God of War Ragnarok will be released in 2022. According to a leak from PlayStation Game Size, the God of War Ragnarok release date is listed as September 30th, 2022 on PlayStation Database. However, this launch date hasn’t been confirmed by the developer yet.

In PlayStation’s official blog post, Santa Monica Studio shared some details about the story of God of War Ragnarok. The story picks up a few years after the events of God of War, which will test the survival skills of Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir. The developer says, “While the last game built an enormous amount of trust and understanding between father and son, there is still a great deal of complexity in their interactions – especially after the revelation of Atreus’ Giant heritage and the hidden prophecy only Kratos saw.” The sequel will explore the relationship between Kratos and Atreus with higher stakes.

However, players who only own the PS4 version of the game will not get a free upgrade when they switch to PS5. The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, said, “I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5) – both digital and physical – will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.”
