Google today announced that it will start manufacturing Pixel phones in India starting with the recently launched Pixel 8. It was announced by Google’s Rick Osterloh at the company’s Made in India event. The made-in-India Pixel 8 should be ready, and available to purchase in 2024.

Google will begin local manufacturing with the Pixel 8. It plans to partner with international and domestic manufacturers to produce Pixels locally. This would mean more availability for the Pixel 8 and other Pixel devices in the country. At present, Google sells its devices exclusively through e-commerce platform, Flipkart. It also has a limited number of devices that it sells in India as compared to other markets.

The Pixel Watch 2, for example, is the first in the series to launch in India. Google didn’t release the first-gen Pixel Watch in India. With local manufacturing set to begin soon, more Google devices are expected to be available in India. As the company itself asserted India being a “priority market” in its announcement.

“India is a priority market for Pixel smartphones, and we’re committed to bringing the best of our hardware and underlying built-in software capabilities to people across the country. In recent years, India has established itself as a truly world-class hub for manufacturing, resulting in a thriving environment for businesses to flourish,” Osterloh said in a blog post.

Now whether this affects the pricing of Pixel devices in India or not isn’t clear yet. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have a hefty price tag with the latter even crossing the 1 lakh mark. We’ll just have to wait and see how Google’s plans in India work out.
