India is projected to assemble up to 50 per cent of Apple’s iPhones by 2027, which will be a significant increase from the current rate of less than five per cent. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, it will bring India’s level of production in line with that of mainland China.
It is already anticipated that India will produce up to 25 per cent of all iPhones by the end of 2023 and up to 40 per cent by 2025. Meanwhile, due to US-China decoupling efforts, China, which produced up to 85 per cent of all iPhones globally last year, is in danger of losing its dominant position as an Apple device manufacturing base, analyst Luke Lin from DigiTimes, the report said. As per the analyst, the Cupertino-based tech giant’s plans to move more of its manufacturing supply chain outside China will “mostly” benefit India and Vietnam.
A recent JPMorgan analysis predicted that India would assemble at least 25 per cent of Apple iPhones globally by 2025.
India plans to manufacture more iPhones
In November, Telecom and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Apple is building its largest iPhone production facility in Hosur, around 40 kilometres from Bengaluru. The plant will employ up to 60,000 people, and 6,000 tribal women from the area of Jharkhand’s Ranchi and Hazaribagh have been trained to assemble iPhones. Apple has chosen Tata Electronics, which has a factory in Hosur, to make the iPhone enclosures.
In 2017, the tech giant began producing iPhones via Wistron in India, starting with the iPhone SE. Since then, the Cupertino behemoth has been putting in a lot of effort with its suppliers to increase production in India. Tata is in talks with Wistron to take over the former’s plant. Recently, Apple announced that it would manufacture iPhone 14 at Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur factory – based in Chennai. Not only that, but it is said that the Apple iPhone 15 will be produced simultaneously in China and India.
