MSI’s India Game Plan: More Power, Local Production, and a Push into Tier 2 Cities

In a recent interview, Mr Bruce Lin, NB Marketing Manager of South Asia for MSI, offered key insights into the company’s strategy for India’s rapidly expanding PC market. Lin identified the rise of esports, a booming creator economy, and the growing demand for AI-ready systems among younger consumers as the primary drivers behind the surge in the premium and gaming segments.

He detailed MSI’s multi-pronged approach to meet these evolving needs, which includes a diverse product portfolio balancing performance and price, a significant expansion of its ‘Make in India’ initiative to include performance-oriented models like the Katana and Crosshair series, and a dedicated strategy to educate consumers on the practical benefits of emerging technologies like on-device AI and the next-generation RTX 50 series GPUs. Furthermore, Lin emphasised MSI’s commitment to a holistic customer experience through a growing omnichannel retail footprint in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and a strengthened nationwide after-sales service network.

1. The Indian PC market has shown impressive growth, particularly in the premium and gaming segments. What specific consumer behaviours and demographics do you believe are driving this demand?

The Indian PC market is really showing tremendous momentum right now, especially in the premium and gaming segments. We have seen how consumer behaviours have evolved, and with the younger demographics driving this shift, it’s an incredibly exciting time for us at MSI.

One of the biggest growth drivers, of course, has been the rise of esports. Competitive gaming has exploded in popularity across India, and with government recognition and initiatives supporting esports as a legitimate sport, more players are now looking for high-performance gaming machines to stay ahead. That’s exactly where we come in. MSI has always focused on delivering top-notch gaming experiences.

But it’s not just about gaming. We are also seeing huge demand from content creators, whether it’s YouTubers, live streamers, video editors, or digital artists who need reliable, power-packed systems to bring their creative visions to life. Young professionals and even students exploring creative careers are making that investment in premium machines, and MSI is proud to support them with devices specifically designed for these workloads. And when we look at the bigger picture, India is quickly moving into an AI-powered future. Advanced technologies are shaping industries like software development, engineering, and research, and this is pushing demand for AI-ready PCs with advanced processing capabilities. Millennials and Gen Z users are increasingly opting for premium devices that can do more than just one job—they want machines that keep pace with their ambitions.

2. How is MSI adapting its product portfolio to cater to the unique needs and preferences of the Indian market, which is largely considered a price-conscious market?

In India, we know that the market is very dynamic and quite price-conscious, so at MSI, we’re making sure our product portfolio really speaks to those unique needs. That’s why we’ve built a lineup that covers everything, from laptops starting around ₹29,000 to high-end machines going up to ₹6 lakhs. This way, whether someone is a first-time buyer, a gamer, or a professional creator, there’s an MSI device that fits their requirements.

We have also focused on striking the right balance between performance and affordability. Take our Crosshair and Katana series, for example—they’re designed to give users powerful specs at very competitive prices, which is exactly what a lot of our Indian customers are looking for.

Another point that’s very important for us is our support for the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. By ramping up local manufacturing, we are not only improving availability and ensuring a steady supply, but over time, this can also help bring down costs for consumers. And of course, accessibility is key. That is why during festive seasons and throughout the year, we roll out promotions like easy EMI options, extended warranties, and special discounts.

3. Beyond gaming, what is the fastest-growing segment for MSI laptops in India? Is it creators, business professionals, or students?

Beyond gaming, the fastest-growing segment for MSI laptops in India is the creator segment. In today’s landscape, people are increasingly identifying them as multi-taskers, breaking traditional boundaries of identity. While MSI has observed growth across all user categories, including students, business professionals, and creators, the demand from creators stands out the most. This surge is driven by the increasing need for powerful AI-enabled and RTX-equipped laptops capable of handling intensive tasks such as video editing, 3D rendering, graphic design, and coding.

Although remote learning and hybrid work have boosted laptop demand among students and business elites, and professionals are upgrading to more premium, future-proof devices, it is the creator community that is pushing the demand for high-performance, specialised machines at the fastest rate.

4. MSI is a pioneer in integrating the latest technologies. What is MSI’s strategy for educating the Indian consumer about the benefits of on-device AI and the new RTX 50 series GPUs, especially when many AI applications are still in their infancy?

We are investing strongly in on-ground engagement through workshops, campus events, and influencer collaborations because there’s nothing quite like getting hands-on with cutting-edge technology.

A big part of our commitment is grassroots education. For example, we have partnered with Google Developer Communities to host over 20 AI-focused workshops every year, giving young developers a chance to directly explore and experiment with the latest advancements. Alongside this, we collaborate with creators and professionals who translate technical know-how into content that really connects with younger audiences.

To make our initiatives more accessible, many physical events have now been transformed into online sessions, extending our reach and allowing more people to engage with the content. And on the retail side, we work closely with staff and online media to explain practical, real-world AI applications like small language models, noise cancellation, or advanced content creation, so that consumers see the tangible benefits in their everyday use.

5. Can you share some of the most impactful AI-powered features that MSI is bringing to its laptops and how they will enhance the user experience for both gamers and creators?

One of our most impactful innovations is the MSI AI Engine, which is seamlessly integrated into the MSI Centre. What makes it special is its ability to automatically detect how the device is being used, whether it’s for gaming, content creation, or even casual browsing, and then optimise system settings on its own. It’s like having a built-in performance manager that ensures peak efficiency without users having to lift a finger.

We’ve also introduced AI noise cancellation, which has been a game-changer for communication. By filtering out background noise in real time, it ensures crystal-clear audio during video calls, online classes, gaming chats, or live streams. For today’s hybrid lifestyle, where work, gaming, and content creation often overlap, this feature really adds tangible value.

Another breakthrough for us has been the MSI AI Robot, our edge-based AI assistant designed to make computing far more intuitive. It interacts in natural human language and allows users to control settings, launch apps, or even receive system updates and suggestions simply through voice commands. This makes everyday tasks faster, smarter, and completely hands-free.

6. With the new RTX 50 series, what is the key message MSI wants to convey to Indian gamers and creators? What is the biggest advantage they will experience?

With the launch of the new RTX 50 series, our message to Indian gamers and creators is clear: the future of high-performance computing has arrived. These laptops don’t just deliver raw power; they combine it with intelligent efficiency, giving users the best of both worlds. Thanks to significantly boosted performance alongside lower power consumption, users can now enjoy more powerful systems with extended battery life, perfect for marathon gaming sessions or heavy creative workloads.

What makes the RTX 50 series stand out even more is its long-term value. These laptops are truly future-proof, ready to handle the fast-paced evolution of AI applications without becoming outdated anytime soon. In fact, they unlock a brand-new frontier in edge AI computing, empowering users to build and run personal small language models (SLMs) directly on their devices. That means better convenience and stronger data security, with far less dependence on cloud platforms.

7. MSI has a reputation for blending performance with aesthetics. How do you find the balance between functional design (e.g., advanced cooling systems) and the aesthetic appeal that attracts a wide range of consumers, including those outside the traditional gaming community?

At MSI, we’ve always believed in striking the right balance between performance and design, staying true to our DNA of Extreme Performance, Luxurious Aesthetics, and Innovative Technology. Performance will always be our top priority, but we also understand that today’s professionals, creators, and even casual users want devices that reflect personal style and modern sophistication.

That’s why we invest in advanced cooling solutions and innovations like MSI OverBoost, so users can enjoy uncompromised power even in slimmer, more portable laptops. At the same time, we focus on thoughtful design, which you can see in our Stealth and Prestige Series—premium MG-AL chassis, stunning 4K 120Hz Mini-LED or OLED displays, and long battery life.

By blending power with elegance, we’re creating devices that don’t just resonate with gamers but also appeal to a much wider audience looking for performance, mobility, and style in one package.

8. The recent announcement of manufacturing the Katana and Crosshair series in India is a significant step. What were the key factors that led to the decision to expand local production from the entry-level to these flagship models?

The decision to begin manufacturing our Katana and Crosshair series in India marks a major milestone for MSI. This move is driven by the surging demand for mid-to-high-performance gaming laptops, showing that Indian consumers are increasingly prioritising power and performance alongside value.

We started our local journey with the Thin and Modern series – entry-level, high-volume models and now, by expanding to flagship devices powered by the RTX 50 series, we’re reflecting the clear shift in preference toward more advanced machines. This evolution highlights the growing maturity of the Indian market, where users no longer settle for just affordability but actively seek high-performance systems.

Bringing performance-driven models like Katana and Crosshair into local production enhances supply chain resilience, ensures better availability, and enables faster delivery for our customers. More importantly, it reinforces MSI’s long-term commitment to India as we continue scaling up local manufacturing and aim to bring more models under the ‘Made in India’ portfolio.

9. What is the long-term vision for MSI’s “Make in India” initiative? How do you foresee this impacting product pricing, availability, and the overall supply chain in India? Has the recent change in GST rates in India affected the price of MSI laptops?

Our long-term vision for the ‘Make in India’ initiative is to expand local manufacturing across all segments—from entry-level to premium devices. By producing a wider range of products here in India, we can ensure faster availability and build a more resilient supply chain, reducing delays and disruptions for our customers.

Yes, recent GST changes have created some short-term price fluctuations, but local manufacturing helps offset that impact and ultimately delivers better value. More importantly, producing locally allows us to quickly adapt to feedback from Indian consumers, ensuring our devices are tailored to their needs. Over time, this strategy will not only improve availability and supply stability but also bring greater pricing consistency to the Indian market.

10. MSI is expanding its retail footprint with exclusive stores and partnerships with large retail chains. How does this strategy complement your online sales channels?

Our expansion through exclusive stores and partnerships with leading retail chains perfectly complements our strong online presence, creating a well-rounded omnichannel strategy. While online channels cater to price-sensitive and digitally savvy customers, our branded stores act as experiential hubs where people can truly engage with MSI products—testing performance, design, and features firsthand.

These stores also go beyond sales by hosting community events like AI workshops and service days, which help us build stronger connections and loyalty with our customers. At the same time, partnerships with major retailers like Croma, Reliance, and Vijay Sales make MSI laptops easily accessible across the country. By combining the convenience of online with the experience of offline, we’re making sure every customer segment gets the best of both worlds.

11. Beyond major metropolitan areas, which specific regions or cities in India are you targeting for future expansion, and why?

While tier-one cities remain our biggest market, we see tremendous potential in tier 2 and tier 3 cities like Agra, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Kochi, Coimbatore, and Jaipur. That’s why our expansion strategy is now focused on reaching these fast-growing regions. We already have 50 brand stores across different cities, and our aim is to ensure customers everywhere get the same seamless MSI experience—whether they’re in a metro or a smaller city. For us, it’s about making advanced technology more accessible and strengthening our presence across India’s diverse markets.

12. With the expansion of the retail network, how is MSI ensuring that after-sales service and customer support keep pace with the growing number of customers?

As we expand our retail network, we’re equally focused on strengthening after-sales service to match our growing customer base. Today, MSI has over 170 service centres across India, plus onsite support in select regions to make things more convenient. We’ve also introduced extended warranty options and Accidental Damage Protection programs to give customers extra peace of mind.

With a clear ‘customer-first’ approach, we’re prioritising faster turnaround times, localised service with readily available spare parts, and regular Service Events at our brand stores offering free check-ups. It’s all about delivering reliability, ease, and confidence to our customers as our presence in India continues to grow.
