Nothing teases screen-less AI product for December launch “which couldn’t have been an app”

Highlights
  • Nothing CEO Carl Pei has confirmed that the company’s first AI-native product will ship in December.
  • The screen-less device is being marketed as a productivity tool, although its functionality remains under wraps.
  • Pei hints at a productivity-focused tool that could help AI capture more context from users’ everyday lives.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has confirmed that the company will launch its first AI-native product in December. The device will have no screen and, according to Pei, is something that “couldn’t have been an app”. While he hasn’t revealed what it does, a teaser image offers a first glimpse of the hardware. It shows a closeup of a black object with a broad, flat surface, a rounded corner and a textured edge, though its form factor is difficult to make out.

In an essay titled Toolmakers, Pei describes the upcoming product as a productivity tool built with the “personality and care” associated with Nothing products. He also outlines why he believes productivity, rather than a new consumer gadget, is where AI hardware should focus first.

What could Nothing’s first AI product do?

Pei argues that AI models are already capable, but lack enough information about users’ everyday lives to be truly useful. He calls this the “context gap”. People routinely connect their inboxes and calendars or share screenshots to give AI assistants the necessary background, but useful information from conversations often never reaches these models.

Pei gives the example of someone sharing an idea over coffee or making a useful remark during a meeting. Reaching for a phone to record it can interrupt the moment, while not saving it means the information may be forgotten. “The intelligence is already here, and the context is what’s missing,” he writes. This points towards an always-available capture device, potentially an AI recorder or note-taking tool that can save conversations and feed them to an AI assistant. However, this is only a possibility based on Pei’s essay, and Nothing hasn’t confirmed the device’s purpose.

The idea would build on the company’s existing software. The Nothing Phone (3a) series introduced the Essential Key, which lets users save voice notes, screenshots and other information to Essential Space. The platform can transcribe recordings and organise saved content into summaries and tasks. Dedicated hardware could take this further by removing the need to reach for a phone to capture information.

Pei believes AI will become useful at work before it finds its defining consumer device. He compares this with PCs, which gained traction through spreadsheets and word processing, and mobile phones, which initially served people who needed to stay connected while working. He is sceptical of the industry’s search for an “iPhone moment” through pins, pendants and smart glasses, arguing that the more immediate opportunity lies in tools that help people get real work done.

There are already products exploring this space. Plaud sells dedicated AI recording devices, while India’s NeoSapien offers a wearable note-taker that captures conversations and generates summaries. Nothing will need to show why its hardware offers an advantage over these products and smartphone-based recording apps.

Pei also says Nothing has tens of millions of devices in people’s “pockets and ears”. Its experience building hardware and software together could help it integrate a new AI tool with its existing ecosystem. However, the company hasn’t said whether the December product will work exclusively with Nothing devices.

For now, its identity and capabilities remain unknown. The teaser image doesn’t establish whether it is wearable, portable or designed for a desk. Interestingly, Nothing also teased the Pokemon Kingdra on its community page last week, with a “Coming Soon” message, although there’s no confirmed link between Kingdra and the upcoming AI device. Whether the two teasers point to the same launch remains to be seen. Nothing should reveal more about its mysterious new product in the coming weeks.
