We put Realme 15 Pro’s AI Edit Genie to the test: Here’s what the photo editing tool can (and can’t) do

The Realme 15 Pro, as observed in our review, is a well-rounded mid-ranger with plenty to offer, such as a good low-light camera, reliable performance, and excellent battery life. We were impressed with some AI features as well, especially AI Edit Genie – a photo-editing tool that can dynamically change images with outfit swaps, background replacements, facial enhancements, and fine-tuned adjustments to colour, contrast, sharpness, shadows, and more. The tool is rated to provide near-professional edits without traditional software, ideal for social media content on the go.

After extensively using the AI Edit Genie on the Realme 15 Pro, I still believe it has a long way to go to replace traditional editing software. However, for Gen Z influencers and casual content creators, it stands out as a creative tool. Read on to find out what works and doesn’t work for the AI Edit Genie.

What works

AI Inspiration

This built-in feature of the AI Edit Genie scans a photo for possible enhancements, which the user can then choose to ‘Execute’ or leave it as that. The AI Inspiration can be activated by tapping on the bulb icon, next to the ‘Hold to speak’ box. Once activated, the feature analyses the image and shares the findings, along with possible areas of improvement, in a text prompt.

The AI Inspiration feature is surprisingly accurate with its analyses, getting things right about nine times out of ten. It’s a useful starting point for users who may be unsure how to enhance their images, offering straightforward suggestions like adjusting sharpness, contrast, or colours to make photos more visually appealing. The processed results often appear noticeably sharper, more detailed, and more vibrant than the original shots. Moreover, the overall quality seems better than the AI Unblur features, which essentially do the same thing as the AI Inspiration to offer sharper results, on the OnePlus Nord 5 and Motorola Edge 60 Pro in the same segment.

What’s more, the AI Inspiration works not just on photos taken with the Realme 15 Pro, but also on images imported from other devices.

Hands-free editing

In addition to AI Inspiration, the AI Edit Genie also supports open-ended prompts via voice commands for hands-free editing, as well as text-based prompts. Users can interact with the tool in any of the 20+ supported languages, such as Hindi, English, and Bengali, provided the selected language matches the system language on the device.

The hands-free editing feature is quite reliable, accepting voice prompts and applying them to images, if (and that’s a big if) the AI Edit Genie understands them correctly. That said, I found both the hands-free and typed editing options far more convenient than the freehand lasso and paint-over tools offered by other AI editors.

Remove objects

Thanks to its strong image analysis capabilities, the AI Edit Genie is impressively accurate when it comes to object removal, such as photobombers, for more pleasing results. The tool consistently detects and removes unwanted elements from photos with near-accurate precision, producing clean results with minimal artefacts. In my experience, it outperformed several other object removal tools in its class, including Realme’s own AI Eraser on the 15 Pro. The edges were relatively cleaner, the background fill was more natural, and the overall output looked less tampered with, making the AI Edit Genie a more reliable option for quick, high-quality edits.

Stylish humans

The real strength of the AI Edit Genie lies in its ability to stylise human subjects. The feature is somewhat similar to Google’s Doppl AI, which allows users to try on clothes virtually. However, unlike Doppl, which is currently limited to select shopping apps, the AI Edit Genie is more versatile and widely accessible. It’s available to all users across India directly on the Realme 15 Pro, without any app-specific restrictions.

The photo-editing tool can dramatically transform the look and feel of an image by altering clothing styles, adding facial features like a beard, or even placing headgear on the subject, all with respectable accuracy. While there is still room for improvement, the tool doesn’t just tweak minor details; it reimagines the entire aesthetic of the person in the photo.

There’s currently no other tool quite like this, not just in the mid-range price band, but even among flagship offerings. The feature proves especially useful in situations where you might feel underdressed, like arriving at a party and realising your outfit doesn’t match the vibe. Just snap a photo, prompt the AI Edit Genie to style you appropriately, and voila, the results are visually impressive and perfectly suited for sharing on social media.

What doesn’t work

Slow & requires internet connection

As impressive as the AI Edit Genie may sound, its sluggish performance can be frustrating. The feature takes an awfully long time to implement changes, often testing your patience. While it does continue processing in the background, those hoping to watch the edits unfold in real time might find themselves repeatedly tapping the screen to keep the display awake.

The tool would benefit from performance optimisation, and while Realme is at it, the brand might also consider enabling offline access for some edits. Despite operating on-device, the AI Edit Genie requires an active internet connection to function and apply changes. This reliance on connectivity can limit the smartphone’s usability in areas with poor network coverage, which may not sit well with content creators and party-goers, its core audience, who expect instant results for sharing and posting.

Can’t change the background

The AI Edit Genie on the Realme 15 Pro also struggles with background changes and seasonal swaps, falling short of expectations in terms of cleanliness and precision. The results often appear artificial, with noticeable blending issues where the subject seems awkwardly merged into the new background. The upcoming Vivo V60, expected to feature the AI Four Seasons Portrait mode similar to the X200 FE, might be a better fit for users seeking stylised portraits with seasonal backgrounds: Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter, within the segment.

Can make images look duller

Another drawback of Realme’s AI Edit Genie is its struggle to preserve visual authenticity. While the tool is impressive when it comes to changing outfits, removing objects, or inserting new elements, these edits often come at the cost of uncalled colour fidelity. In several instances, the final output appeared noticeably muted or washed out compared to the original image. This issue is particularly evident when swapping elements within a photo, where the edited portions fail to blend naturally with the rest of the scene. As a result, images not only lose their vibrancy but also appear artificially altered, which may disappoint users seeking clean, professional-looking results without compromising realism.

Summing up

The Realme 15 Pro’s AI Edit Genie is a commendable feature, showcasing how easy editing can be with automation. However, it is still far from pro-level editing tools. If you are starting your influencer journey and need a photo editing tool that doesn’t require technical knowledge, the AI Edit Genie could be a good fit. In addition to the Realme 15 Pro, the feature is available on the Realme 15, which is selling in India at Rs 25,999 for its base variant.

The Realme 15 Pro, on the other hand, is priced at Rs 31,999 and comes with a slightly powerful Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chipset instead of the MediaTek Dimensity 7300+ SoC on the vanilla variant. All other specifications of the Realme 15 and 15 Pro are identical.
