Comparing Samsung Galaxy M55 and Realme 12 Pro: which is the better mid-range phone?

Samsung Galaxy M55 5G’s price in India was revealed recently and the phone falls in a highly competitive sub-Rs 30,000 segment. For its price, the handset touts the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, a Super AMOLED Plus display, a 5,000mAh battery, and Android 14 OS out of the box. In the same segment, we get the Realme 12 Pro, which also offers some impressive specifications as well as an attractive design language. Let’s take a look at how the two phones compare.

Samsung Galaxy M55 vs Realme 12 Pro: design

The Realme 12 Pro comes with a more premium design at least from the first look. We get a curved display on the front with narrow bezels and a premium leather back panel, with a circular camera module inspired by the ‘Luxury Watch Design’ developed in collaboration with International Luxury Watch Designer Ollivier Savéo. In comparison, the Galaxy M55 offers flat edges on the front and bezels around the screen and a polycarbonate body with triple cameras on the back. In terms of design, the Realme 12 Pro is a winner.

Samsung Galaxy M55 vs Realme 12 Pro: display

Both the Samsung Galaxy M55 and Realme 12 Pro share the same display size at 6.7-inch and 120Hz refresh rate for smoother UI transitions. However, Samsung takes the edge thanks to its very own Super AMOLED Plus panel compared to the OLED screen on the Realme phone. The former is believed to consume lower power and even offer better sunlight reflection.

Samsung Galaxy M55 also takes the lead with 1000 nits peak brightness compared to 800 nits on the Realme 12 Pro. This makes it much more easy to use the Samsung phone outdoors. While the Realme phone offers slim bezels and curved edges, the Samsung offering comes with noticeable bezels and flat edges.

Samsung Galaxy M55 vs Realme 12 Pro: performance

Among the two, the Samsung Galaxy M55 gets a slightly more powerful chipset i.e. the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 compared to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1. However, there’s very little difference in terms of benchmarks. The Realme 12 Pro in our review (Read it here) scored 5,64,897 points in the AnTuTu benchmarks compared to 5.8 lakhs on the Samsung Galaxy M55.

Where Samsung takes the lead is with its 12GB RAM option compared to just the 8GB option for the Realme 12 Pro. One can expect the performance on both phones should be more or less similar but the Samsung phone should offer a better multitasking experience thanks to the 12GB RAM option.

Samsung Galaxy M55 vs Realme 12 Pro: cameras

As for the cameras, the Samsung Galaxy M55 5G and the OnePlus Nord CE4 feature the same primary and secondary cameras: 50MP + 8MP dual cameras. However, the Realme 12 Pro gets a 32MP telephoto shooter, which is more versatile compared to the 2MP macro shooter on the Samsung phone. The telephoto shooter allowed us to capture long-distance shots with better clarity and little noise. There is 2x optical zoom support as well.

In the front camera department, the Samsung phone offers a 50MP shooter compared to a 16MP shooter on the Realme 12 Pro. This should result in better and sharper selfies in good to moderate lighting conditions.

Samsung Galaxy M55 vs Realme 12 Pro: battery, software

The Samsung Galaxy M55 and the Realme 12 Pro pack the same 5,000mAh battery but the latter gets a faster 67W fast charging compared to 45W on the Samsung model. During our review, the Realme 12 Pro took around 45 minutes to charge from 0-100 percent. In comparison, the 45W charger should take a little longer to charge the battery fully. We should find out the details in our review.

Both phones run on Android 14 OS out of the box. But Samsung is offering 4 years of major upgrades and 5 years of security updates.

Verdict

As evident from the comparison, the Samsung Galaxy M55 gets a better chipset, a superior AMOLED display, a sharper 50MP selfie camera, and longer software support. However, the Realme 12 Pro takes the edge with a premium and eye-catching design, a versatile 32MP telephoto camera, and a faster 67W fast charging.

So the choice is quite clear if you want better cameras, faster charging, and an impressive design, the Realme 12 Pro is a better buy. For everything else, the Galaxy M55 should be your choice.
