Samsung’s next generation of smartwatches appears to be inching closer to launch. Two upcoming Samsung smartwatches, carrying model numbers SM-L3550 and SM-L7150, have now surfaced on China’s CMIIT certification platform, adding to a growing list of regulatory appearances ahead of their expected debut. While the certification does not explicitly reveal the product names, the model numbers have previously been linked to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, respectively.
The appearance of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 on CMIIT is significant because it typically indicates that a product is nearing its commercial release in the Chinese market.
The latest development follows recent listings on both China’s 3C certification database and India’s BIS certification portal, suggesting an imminent global launch. The 3C certification revealed that both smartwatches will support 10W wired charging, matching the charging speeds offered by the current-generation Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch Ultra.
According to recent reports, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 could feature a sizeable 784mAh battery and may become Samsung’s first smartwatch with 5G connectivity. The rumored 5G connectivity for the Ultra 2, if true, would be a game-changer for independent use. It’s also rumoured to use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, which is expected to bring stronger on-device AI capabilities and improved power efficiency. This would give the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 an edge over rival smartwatches as AI becomes more infused in our daily lives.
Meanwhile, the standard Galaxy Watch 9 is tipped to arrive in 40mm and 44mm variants, with battery capacities reportedly reaching 382mAh and 435mAh. It is expected to use a new Exynos wearable chipset designed to deliver better battery life while supporting the latest Wear OS features.
The Galaxy Watch 9 feels more like the mainstream option focused on everyday fitness and productivity, while the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 could target outdoor enthusiasts and power users looking for longer battery life, premium materials, and advanced connectivity features. As for current Galaxy Watch 8/Ultra owners, you might want to hold off and see if the upgrades are significant.
With certifications now appearing across multiple regulatory platforms, Samsung’s smartwatch lineup appears to be entering the final stages before launch. The company is widely expected to unveil the new Galaxy Watch series alongside its next-generation foldable smartphones at a Galaxy Unpacked event rumoured to take place in London on July 22nd.
