Why is OnePlus launching OnePlus N6 in India?

The upcoming smartphone from OnePlus will mark the debut of an entirely new product line, dubbed the ‘N’ series. This is the first time since 2020 that the company has introduced a smartphone outside its flagship Number and Nord line-ups. The first smartphone in the series will be called the OnePlus N6, likely to keep its naming convention close to the Nord series.

The handset is set to make its global debut in India on June 30th. While OnePlus has already begun teasing key specifications ahead of the launch, and we have detailed our expectations from the device in a separate article, this piece focuses on the bigger picture. We examine the strategy behind the new N series, what prompted OnePlus to expand its portfolio, the gap the new line-up aims to address, and the role it could play in the company’s long-term smartphone strategy.

Increase in smartphone prices

Until 2024, OnePlus had a strong presence in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment with the Nord CE4 Lite. However, the situation has changed significantly over the past two years. The company skipped a generation in between, while rising component costs, particularly for RAM and storage, which have reportedly increased by more than 130 percent, have pushed smartphone prices higher across the industry.

As a result, the recently launched OnePlus Nord CE6 Lite now retails for over Rs 25,000 in India, making it roughly 25 percent more expensive than the Nord CE4 Lite it succeeds. This has effectively left a gap in OnePlus’ portfolio in the highly competitive sub-Rs 20,000 segment, a space the company once catered to aggressively.

Recent price hikes due to rising component costs have left a gap in OnePlus’ portfolio in the highly competitive sub-Rs 20,000 segment.

No OnePlus Nord-series phone in sub-Rs 20,000

The Nord CE Lite model in the company’s lineup was primarily launched to cater to the needs of the sub-Rs 20,000 segment, which seems to be gaining traction due to the weekend demand of the sub-Rs 10,000 segment, as reported by IDC. But with the OnePlus Nord CE6 Lite launch, the segment has been left void.

OnePlus Nord CE6 Lite

The OnePlus N6 could potentially fill this gap. It also appears to be a more practical solution than introducing a cheaper variant of the Nord CE6 Lite, which may have complicated the company’s naming strategy and created confusion among buyers. By launching an entirely new series, OnePlus may be looking to address the sub-Rs 20,000 segment more effectively while maintaining a clear distinction between its various product line-ups.

Restructuring portfolio

With the introduction of the OnePlus N6, the company is also streamlining its smartphone portfolio with clearer product segmentation. The flagship Number series will continue to target premium buyers, offering top-tier performance, premium design, and the latest innovations. The Nord series, meanwhile, will cater to the mid-range segment, bringing flagship-inspired experiences at more accessible price points.

The new N series will focus on budget-conscious consumers, particularly India’s 377 million-plus Gen Z population. OnePlus notes that this demographic already accounts for 44 percent of smartphone purchases in the country, making it a key target audience for the lineup.

OnePlus N6 for young and neo generation

OnePlus has confirmed that its N6 will target the young population in the Rs 18,000-Rs 25,000 segment. The OEM claims that the N in the series stands for New, Neo, and Never Off, bringing the core OnePlus experience, long-lasting battery, smooth performance, and thoughtful design to users who rely on their smartphones for entertainment, casual gaming, learning, creativity, and staying connected.

“For Gen Z consumers especially, smartphones are not secondary screens anymore; they are where life happens. Whether it is content creation, entertainment, casual gaming, learning, or staying connected, this generation expects technology that can keep up with them without compromise. That is what led us to build the N Series,” said Ford, Vice-President, OnePlus India, in a press release.

Everything we know about the OnePlus N6 so far!

True to its promise, the first smartphone in the new series will come with a massive battery. The OnePlus N6 is confirmed to feature a massive 8,000mAh battery, which the company claims can deliver up to three days of usage on a single charge. OnePlus also says the battery is engineered to retain more than 80 percent of its original health after seven years of regular use. The battery will be backed by 45W SuperVOOC fast charging and software optimisations that are claimed to maintain smooth performance for up to 60 months.

Furthermore, the smartphone will boast a flat-frame design with a square camera module positioned in the top-left corner of the back panel. The OnePlus N6 is expected to come in Black and Green colour options.

While OnePlus has yet to confirm the full specifications, benchmark listings suggest the smartphone could be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 6300-series chipset paired with at least 6GB of RAM. The chipset already rocks Realme P4R and OPPO K14 in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment, which have proved themselves to be reliable smartphones for everyday performance. The OnePlus N6 will be available through Amazon India, the official OnePlus website, and offline retail channels following its launch.
