Billy Crystal had written the part of Eddie for himself years ago, but Joe Roth persuaded Crystal to take on the role of Lee the publicist, as he felt Crystal was too old to play the part by then.
This was Joe Roth's first picture as director in 11 years. Initially Billy Crystal was slated to direct the picture. When Roth read the script, he was totally immersed and liked the script so much that he wanted to direct. Crystal granted Roth's request to direct the picture and stayed on as producer.
Robert Downey Jr. was originally slated to play Eddie. John Cusack was cast instead when Downey's legal problems raised doubts as to whether he would be available for filming.
Julia Roberts turned down the lead role for the supporting one. This is the 2nd movie based on a Hollywood actress falling for someone from the showbiz, only in Notting Hill the guy was a book store owner.
Steve Pink who played John Cusack's limo driver also played Cusack's classmate in Grosse Pointe Blank (1997). Pink was also a screenwriter for High Fidelity (2000) and directed Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), both starring Cusack.
"Kiki: [imitating Gwen] "Oh, Kiki, my butter has touched another food. I need new butter." "Anything you want, honey." That's the way it goes, Lee. Right? You're a publicist, you know. Anything they want, right? She's got a green dress. Looks like crap on her. Brings out the circles under her eyes, she knows it, I know it. She gave it to me. It actually looks pretty nice on me. Then she said, well, maybe she wanted it back, you know? She doesn't want it, she just doesn't want me to have it. That's the truth."
"Danny: You like Eddie, don't you? Lee: I love him. Danny: But you leaked the tape. Lee: Survival rule number three, kid: You're not here to love anybody. You're here to promote a movie. That's it. Period. Say you're here and you get word that your mother died. You know, like, hit by a bus or something. You go downstairs, you shed a tear, and you say, "It's a shame. She would have loved this movie.""
