IMDbThe Spanish director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia received a lot of appreciation for the brilliant piece of art that he has created. The movie was also presented at the Toronto Film Festival where it managed to steal the hearts of the audience with its extremely twisted and sinister plot. The plot is so unique that it makes the movie stand out from the bunch of basic science-fiction films out there. The delicacy and efforts that have been put into the overall production of the film are truly reflective in the overall quality of the content that has been introduced in the world of Cinema. Speaking in totality, the plot and the storyline of the film are so powerful that it keeps the viewers on their toes and finally becomes the most intriguing horror science-fiction film ever produced. It is a perfect blend of suspense, thrill, horror, and drama. The movie also received a good IMDb rating from the audience,

The film was shot chronologically, as Iván Massagué had to lose 12 kilos (26 lbs) over the six-week shoot to show his physical deterioration.
The "Verticle Self-Management Center" is an obvious allegory for society, with those at the top provided the best of everything and a willingness to consume far more than necessary at the expense of those below, while those at the lowest levels of society must suffer and go without. This can apply to society within a country or the worldwide society of first world countries. It also attempts to show that revolutionary change within a capitalist society doesn't happen spontaneously, since most people have no class consciousness and live complacent lives.
Most building floors are numbered from lowest to highest from bottom to top, but the prison is the exact reverse with level 1 at the top, the same numbering system as the Circles of Hell in Dante's Inferno. Inhabitants of the Third Circle, reserved for gluttons, are punished for their exercise greed and appetite above on Earth, and like the prison inhabitants on the higher floors, hoard what they desire at the expense of others.
Trimagasi and Goreng say "obvio" (Eng. "obviously") 26 times along the movie.
"Goreng: The people above won't listen to me. Imoguiri: Why not? Goreng: I can't shit upwards."
"[first lines] Goreng: [narrating] There are 3 kinds of people; the ones above, the ones below, and the ones who fall."
