The trend of no notch display is slowly catching up as smartphone vendors are busy prepping the in-display technology, which from the look of it could be the next big smartphone design innovation. OPPO and Xiaomi demoed their prototypes with an in-display selfie snapper technology just yesterday. Now, as it turns out, Huawei's sub-brand Honor is also silently working on a similar design, as confirmed by Honor president George Zhao in a recent interview. However, there's no clarity on when the phone might be announced.
Furthermore, the vendor claims to have already developed the prototype device featuring the under display camera, but it seems to be causing issues at the moment, holding back the company from showing it off. However, Zhao exhibited confidence to launch a commercial product with in-display camera in the near future. Moreover, Honor will continue to retain the punch-hole design, which was first introduced with the Honor View 20 earlier this year. Given the company's lean phase with the United States trade ban, the under-display innovation might not arrive until 2020.
The in-display camera technology could pave the way for ultimate full-screen display by removing notches, or pop-up sliders, and it could also make the smartphones completely waterproof as it doesn't require any openings. However, the camera quality and its repairability can only be judged once a final product is officially released. Strangely, noted tipster 'Ben Geskin' claimed that OPPO's in-screen camera technology would hit the market later this year but another well-known tipster Ice Universe says it won't hit the market till next year, so we should know more details and answers down the year.
