Qualcomm-enabled affordable 5G phone

  • The Money Control report says that an upcoming phone by an OEM will be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest chipset.
  • This SoC is claimed to offer a complete 5G experience while not breaking your wallets.
  • Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Handsets, Chris Patrick highlighted the importance of making the transition from 4G to 5G as seamless as possible.

“The collaboration aims to speed up the shift from 4G to 5G in India, providing users an affordable and straightforward upgrade,” said the top executive.

Furthermore, the executives at Qualcomm are positive about the market potential of affordable 5G smartphones. This is citing the data from GSMA, indicating the reach to as many as 2.8 billion users globally, including India. The company is also working with developers to create practical uses for 5G technology that will benefit consumers.

In the past, Jio launched a few 4G feature phones like JioPhone and JioBharat in the country. However, the phones didn’t sell as many as number as the company would want. The primary reason behind this could be that the phones aren’t proper alternatives to full-fledged smartphones. While these come with pre-installed apps like YouTube and WhatsApp, users will not be able to download more apps. With the Jio 5G phone, the company is hoping to solve the issue in partnership with Qualcomm.

At the moment, we don’t know much about the entry-level 5G phone but we should learn more details in the days to come.
