OPPO has officially teased one of the most ambitious camera upgrades for its upcoming Find X9 Ultra. The upcoming smartphone will feature a 10× telephoto lens with Hasselblad tuning, and is teased to bring a teleconverter on a smartphone itself. OPPO, along with other brands like Xiaomi and Vivo, is known to offer teleconverter kits with their Ultra smartphones for longer zoom shots.
Until now, most flagship smartphones, including devices like the Galaxy S Ultra series, have capped out at 10× hybrid zoom or 5× optical zoom. Samsung did offer a 10x telephoto with the S23 Ultra, but discontinued it with the newer models. OPPO’s move to deliver true 10× optical magnification could be a major inflection point for mobile photography. This essentially brings DSLR-style telephoto reach into a pocketable device, a feature we’ve already seen with most of the new Android flagships. However, the experience is expected to be enhanced with the Find X9 Ultra.
What this essentially means is that the OPPO Find X9 Ultra will be good for scenarios like wildlife and sports photography without needing external lenses, crisper long-distance portraits, and low-light zoom shots, since optical zoom retains more detail than digital cropping.
OPPO had also shared a teaser image of the Find X9 Ultra, which highlights a pressure-sensitive orange “Quick Button”, positioned on the side of the phone. This isn’t entirely new for OPPO, but it’s being pushed as a core camera control here. Functionally, it’s expected to work as shortcuts for the camera app and its features. These include double-tap to launch the camera instantly, press to capture photos, slide to zoom in/out smoothly, and custom gestures for shortcuts like audio recording.
With a 10× zoom lens onboard, such tactile controls could significantly improve usability, especially for steady framing at long focal lengths.
In terms of specs, the OPPO Find X9 Ultra is expected to house a 200MP primary sensor (likely Sony LYTIA 901), a 200MP periscope sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide, and a 50MP 10x telephoto camera. It’s a quad-camera setup like the previous Ultra models. Up front could be a 6.82-inch 2K LTPO OLED display, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC, and a 7,000mAh+ battery.
The Find X9 Ultra is set to launch globally in April, marking a significant shift for OPPO. Traditionally, its Ultra-tier devices have remained China-exclusive, but this will be the first Ultra model to launch outside China. That move suggests OPPO is ready to take on global heavyweights more aggressively, especially in the premium camera phone space.
The OPPO Find X9 Ultra would be the perfect option for photography enthusiasts or creators who rely on high-quality videos. But these upgrades also mean a hefty price tag, considering it’s the most premium model, and the ongoing situation of price hikes in the smartphone industry. So, those who are more into casual photography may still be fine without the Find X9 Ultra, as current flagships already deliver a well-rounded experience without pushing into experimental camera territory.
