  • OxygenOS 16 open beta is available for select OnePlus phones in India.

OnePlus is set to unveil OxygenOS 16 based on the latest Android 16 version on October 16th. This is a global and India launch for the new software update. But do note that this is only the official reveal where OnePlus will showcase what’s new with OxygenOS 16, including its features and UI changes. The official rollout for the update will start in a phased manner later. But if you can’t wait that long, you can try out OxygenOS 16 through its open beta version in India, provided you have one of the compatible OnePlus phones.

OnePlus has launched the OxygenOS 16 open beta program in India for select phones, including the OnePlus 13, OnePlus 13s, OnePlus 13R, OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, and OnePlus Open. So if you have any of these devices, you can click on the respective link and apply for the beta program. The application is open till October 13th, so you’ll have to hurry if you want to try out the new OxygenOS update. Here’s a step-by-step guide to download the update:

  • Go to Settings > System & update > Software update.
  • Ensure your device is updated to the latest version.
  • Tap the three dots menu button in the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Select “Beta program” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete your application.
  • You’ll have to take part in a quiz and get as many correct answers as possible. Once you’re done, your application will be sent for review.
  • A score of 80 is recommended for a higher chance of your application being approved.
  • Once your application is accepted, you will receive the OxygenOS 16 beta update to download and install.

The process isn’t straightforward, so back up your data before downloading the beta update. Some third-party apps may experience compatibility issues; therefore, it is recommended to update them via the Google Play Store. OnePlus notes that you may experience temporary heating, lag, or increased power consumption after installation and recommends restarting your phone after a full charge or regular use to help it stabilise.

Since it’s a beta update, it may be less stable and reliable than the official public release. Also, some of the planned features may not be fully available or functional in this initial version and will be introduced in subsequent updates.

You can always switch back to the stable version by downloading the Rollback Package ZIP file for your device. Then, go to Settings > About device > Version, tap Build number seven times, and enter your lock screen password to enable Developer mode. Next, return to Settings > About device > Up to date, tap the menu icon, and select Local install. Choose the rollback package ZIP file, wait for the upgrade to reach 100 percent, and then tap Restart to finish.

Compared to OxygenOS 15, the new iteration is expected to offer improved fluidity and customisations. OxygenOS 16 is expected to be faster and offer improved AI features, bringing it closer to what Samsung and Google offer on Galaxy and Pixel phones.

While OnePlus hasn’t disclosed the full details of the new AI features in OxygenOS 16 yet, they have confirmed that Google’s Gemini AI models will be integrated into the Android 16-based update. The update is expected to bring new on-device AI capabilities and may allow Gemini to access content saved in the Mind Space hub, enhanced by the Plus Mind feature, according to an official teaser. We should know more at the official launch, which is less than a week away.

Although the OxygenOS 16 beta is available for a limited models, the stable version will be compatible with additional OnePlus devices, including the OnePlus 15, OnePlus 11 series, OnePlus Nord 5, OnePlus Nord 4, OnePlus Nord 3, Nord CE4, Nord CE4 Lite, Nord CE5, OnePlus Pad, and OnePlus Pad 2.

So, should you update to OxygenOS 16 beta? If you’re an enthusiast and understand the risks involved, then yes, you can go ahead and update to OxygenOS 16 beta. However, if you’re unsure about how this works and fear losing your data or need your phone to function properly, we advise against it. The stable version of OxygenOS 16 is expected to be available to all devices soon, allowing you to experience it before the end of this year. As for users of older OnePlus devices, you might consider upgrading or purchasing devices compatible with OxygenOS 16 to experience AI features and enhanced performance.

OxygenOS 16 promises a smarter, AI-driven experience for OnePlus users, but it’s best enjoyed on the stable release for a seamless and reliable experience.
