"Redmi K30 Pro could be the first smartphone to launch with an LCD display and in-screen fingerprint sensor"
Redmi has just confirmed that it has successfully implemented an in-display fingerprint sensor on an LCD screen. Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing posted a video on Weibo showing the in-display fingerprint technology working on a phone with an LCD panel. So far, in-display fingerprint technology has only been employed on OLED displays. This is because LCD panels do not allow light to pass through the display, which prevents under-display sensors from working. However, the executive says Redmi's R&D team has overcome this problem and this technology is ready for mass production.
Weibing explains the "use of infrared high-transmittance film material greatly improves the transmittance of infrared light that could not pass through the screen. The infrared transmitter at the bottom of the screen emits infrared light. After this fingerprint is reflected, it penetrates the screen and shines on the fingerprint sensor to complete the fingerprint verifications."
The timing of this announcement suggests that the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro may be the first smartphone to launch with an LCD display and in-display fingerprint sensor, although the upcoming flagship has been previously speculated to launch with an OLED screen. To recall, the Redmi K30 was launched in China with an LCD display and side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Redmi K30 Pro is expected to launch later this month with a Snapdragon 865 SoC and without a punch-hole display.
The Redmi K30 Pro is also tipped to sport a 64MP quad camera setup, 4,700mAh battery with 30W fast charging support and Android 10-based MIUI 11. It is possible that Redmi will use this technology on affordable Redmi phones later this year while premium models like the Redmi K30 Pro will ship with OLED displays. With Redmi achieving this technological breakthrough, we can potentially see more affordable LCD smartphones launch with in-display fingerprint sensors in the near future.
