Vivo Y400 5G launched in India with 6,000mAh battery, AMOLED display, and rugged build

Vivo has launched the Y400 5G in India, a slim phone with a rugged build and a massive battery. Despite being just 7.9mm thick, the Vivo Y400 5G packs a 6,000mAh cell, larger than the 5,500mAh battery in the Y400 Pro 5G. It also comes with IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, along with military-grade durability certification. The phone appears to target lower-midrange buyers in the offline market, and here’s why we think so.

Vivo Y400 5G is priced at Rs 21,999 for the 8GB + 128GB model and Rs 23,999 for the 8GB + 256GB model. It is available across vivo’s online store, Flipkart, Amazon and offline retail channels. Buyers can avail of launch offers, including up to Rs 1000 instant discount on select bank credit and debit cards. There is a Rs 1,000 exchange bonus, up to 10 per cent cashback with select bank cards, and up to 10 months EMI with zero down payment.

The phone is available in Glam White and Olive Green colours from August 7th.

The phone measures 7.9mm thick, weighs 198 grams, and sports a flat display with flat sides.

On the front of the phone, you get a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate and 1800nits local peak brightness. The peak brightness is lower than that of the Pro model, but the High Brightness Mode, which helps in legibility under sunlight, is closer to that of the Pro model. Combined with stereo speakers, this makes the phone well-suited for media consumption.

The camera setup for both the front and rear is similar to the Y400 Pro 5G: 50MP+ 2MP (bokeh) rear duo and a 32MP selfie shooter. We expect the results to be identical too. In our Y400 Pro’s review, we noted, “In good lighting conditions, the 50MP camera delivers sufficient detail, pleasing night mode shots, and decent portraits. But, in trickier situations, the handset doesn’t recover shadow detail well, due to dynamic range compression”.

Vivo says the phone supports underwater photography via custom button controls. The phone is IP68 and IP69 dust and water resistant and offers Wet-touch support. For enhanced durability, the phone has military-grade (MIL-STD-810H) certification after passing various stress tests.

Under the hood, the phone has a large 6,000mAh BlueVolt battery with 90W FlashCharge. So, you are getting a bigger battery than the Y400 Pro, but the same charging speed. This should ease concerns around battery drain and charging delays. Vivo claims up to 4 years of battery health and a full charge in around 44 minutes.

Internally, the Vivo phone is powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, which is based on a 4nm process node and packs two Cortex-A78 performance cores at 2.2 GHz frequency and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.95GHz clock speed. The 4nm SoC is efficiency-oriented and should keep thermal performance and battery drain in check.

The Vivo Y300 5G features the same chip, priced from Rs 21,999. In 2025, the Snapdragon chip can be found in some phones under Rs 10,000, too.

Finally, the Vivo Y400 5G ships with Android 15, and the newer Funtouch OS 15 offers a newer UI, AI features (like Circle to Search, AI Note Assist, and AI Transcript Assist), and other utilities.

Who is it for?

Based on its specs, the Vivo Y400 5G is aimed at users looking for a sub-Rs 22,000 phone that prioritises design, durability, battery life and a good AMOLED screen for daily use. Vivo Y-series typically targets offline markets, so if you prefer to see and hold the phone before buying, visit a nearby retail store.

Unlike online-first competitors that chase performance scores, Vivo is focusing on reliability, build quality, and offline presence to drive growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. However, if you prefer more performance-oriented phones, then you can consider something like the iQOO Z10 and Motorola Edge 60 Fusion.
