Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra India launch tipped for March; Pro variants skipped globally

Highlights
  • Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra will succeed last year’s Xiaomi 15 and 15 Ultra.
  • The Pro models with secondary displays will reportedly not launch globally.
  • Xiaomi might launch the 17 series early this time, ahead of MWC.

After launching in China, the Xiaomi 17 series is now set to make its global debut. There might be a slight change this time, though, as Xiaomi is rumoured to globally unveil its flagship smartphones earlier than usual this year, with the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra set to launch ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC). The company is also reportedly lining up an India launch for early March, continuing its strategy of bringing its top-end phones to the market soon after their China debut.

This information comes from tipster Yogesh Brar, who says the Xiaomi 17 Pro series will not be released outside China. Why does this matter? The Pro models are undoubtedly the most exciting in the lineup, with their secondary displays and a design very close to the iPhone 17 Pro series. The Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max differ, though with an interactive secondary display and better hardware. Instead of the Pro models, select global markets will receive a Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition by February 28th, highlighting the brand’s continued focus on photography.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra

Both the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra are powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, firmly placing them in the ultra-premium Android category. In China, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra starts at CNY 6,999, which roughly converts to around Rs 91,000. It features a large 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The standard Xiaomi 17 sits slightly lower in the lineup, with a more compact 6.3-inch OLED display, and starts at CNY 4,499, or around Rs 59,000, making it one of the more powerful compact flagships on the market.

As for the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra, these are the standard and most premium models in the series. Both the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra are powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. Cameras are where the Xiaomi 17 Ultra clearly separates itself. The phone comes with a Leica-branded triple camera system that includes a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 200MP telephoto camera, aimed at delivering strong performance across landscape, portrait, and street photography. Xiaomi has also refreshed its photography kits for the 17 Ultra, offering a redesigned ergonomic grip and magnetic attachment support for users who want a more camera-like shooting experience. The phone is backed by a large 6,800mAh battery with support for 90W wired and 50W wireless charging.

Xiaomi 17

The standard Xiaomi 17 takes a slightly different approach. Despite its smaller size, it packs a massive 7,000mAh battery, which is impressive for a compact flagship. It also carries a Leica camera setup, featuring a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP telephoto lens with a Leica 60mm floating lens design, making it an appealing option for users who want strong camera performance without moving to an oversized phone.

In India, Xiaomi appears set to follow a familiar playbook by launching the successors to the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Pricing, however, will be a key factor. The Xiaomi 15 launched at Rs 64,999, while the Xiaomi 15 Ultra was priced at Rs 109,999. With rising component costs and the new Snapdragon chipset, the Xiaomi 17 series is expected to be priced slightly higher. This could put the phones directly up against rivals such as the Vivo X300 series and the OPPO Find X9 lineup.

Xiaomi’s continued Leica partnership shows how aggressively brands are competing in the premium smartphone space, especially around camera capabilities and battery size. Anyone planning to upgrade to a flagship in 2026, the Xiaomi 17 series looks promising, particularly for those who want top-tier performance, advanced cameras, and long battery life. It would also be the last set of flagship phones to arrive, giving buyers more options to choose from and also compare with other existing flagships.

How the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra stack up against Vivo and OPPO’s next flagships could ultimately decide whether they are worth the premium asking price.
