MediaTek adds AI-powered traffic control to home routers for smoother NVIDIA GeForce NOW streaming
MediaTek has announced a new AI feature for home internet devices that aims to cut lag in cloud gaming, starting with NVIDIA GeForce NOW. The AI‑powered Active Queue Management (AQM) system runs on customer premises equipment (CPE) such as home gateways and routers. MediaTek claims it can reduce network latency by up to ten times, helping game streams feel smoother and more responsive.
How does it work?
Cloud gaming relies on quick, stable connections, but home networks often slow down when many devices are active at the same time. Instead of asking operators to upgrade their core networks, MediaTek’s new solution works at the edge on T930‑based CPEs via a firmware update.
It combines standards‑based AQM with an AI quality‑of‑service engine that constantly monitors real‑time conditions, such as wireless quality, upload congestion and how many people are using the network. The system then automatically adjusts how it handles traffic to keep delay and jitter low when it matters most.
Because AI AQM sits in the CPE, it does not need changes to apps, cloud platforms or operator infrastructure, and it works without deep packet inspection. Any latency‑sensitive service, including cloud gaming, video calls, remote work tools and everyday browsing, can benefit from smoother performance on a busy home network.
MediaTek says this approach will help NVIDIA GeForce NOW users see faster input response, more consistent frames and fewer interruptions, making cloud gaming feel closer to playing on a local console or PC.
