The Thumb-Thumbs are based on a drawing that Robert Rodriguez did as a child.
Director Robert Rodriguez edited the movie in his "garage." His garage is really a state of the art editing studio that is in his home, but he calls it his garage.
The last Robert Rodriguez movie shot on film. Post-production was done at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch where he introduced Rodriguez to High-Definition digital film making.
Carla Gugino was reluctant to accept the role of Ingrid Cortez. Gugino felt she was too young, at the age of 29, to have an 8 year-old boy and a 12 year old girl as her children. Director Robert Rodriguez told her that his own mother had him and all of his siblings by the time she was thirty, and they were a similar age as the kids in the movie. Gugino was reassured and ultimately accepted the role of Ingrid Cortez.
Stayed at number one in the U.S. box office charts for three straight weeks.
"Gregorio Cortez: [sees Ms. Gradenko's hair; half of it is burned off due to a previous encounter she had with Carmen and Juni] Ms. Gradenko... I think. Ms. Gradenko: Oh, it's me all right. I owe my new look to your children. Gregorio Cortez: Remind me to raise their allowance."
"Carmen Cortez: Oh shiitake mushrooms."
