Before production began, Sir Michael Caine told producer and director Brian Henson, "I'm going to play this movie like I'm working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role, and there are no puppets around me." Henson replied "Yes, bang on!"
Sir Michael Caine considers the role of Scrooge to be one of his most memorable (to him).
Halfway through production, Sir Michael Caine realized this movie was Brian Henson's directorial debut. Caine was deeply impressed.
The song "When Love Is Gone", sung by Belle, was dropped from the theatrical release (over the objections of producer and director Brian Henson) at the request of Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, who considered it too sad for young children.) The last-minute decision resulted in a jarring edit in the scene from which it was removed, and caused some confusion about Scrooge, Gonzo, and Rizzo's reactions. The scene was restored in the VHS, LaserDisc, and first DVD (full screen) releases, but it isn't used in television airings, Blu-ray releases, or the Netflix or the original Disney+ version. However, it is available as an "EXTRAS" option on Disney+. In mid-December 2020, Brian Henson announced that the original negatives for the removed scene had been found and would be re-instated (back) into the film, in time for its 30th anniversary in 2022.
The Ghost of Christmas Past effects were created by making a special puppet that was operated in a tank of water and then greenscreened into the movie to make it look like it was floating.
"Rizzo the Rat: There are two things in this life I hate: heights, and jumping from them. Gonzo: Too late now. Come on, I'll catch you. Rizzo the Rat: God save my little broken body! [Jumps and falls to the ground. He looks at Gonzo] Gonzo: Missed. Rizzo the Rat: Oh wait a second... I forgot my jellybeans. Um... [Slides through the bars to retrieve them, and joins Gonzo back on the other side. Gonzo stares at him] Rizzo the Rat: What? Gonzo: You can fit through those bars? Rizzo the Rat: Yeah... Gonzo: You are such an idiot."
"Rizzo the Rat: Mother always taught me: "Never eat singing food.""
