Ali Mosaffa learned French two months before filming began with the help of his wife, Leila Hatami.
Asghar Farhadi wrote the script in Persian and then lived in France for two years in order to better understand the rhythms of the French language so that he would be able to more accurately judge the translation of his script and the performance of his actors.
Director Asghar Farhadi does not speak French and had to direct the movie through a translator.
Pauline Burlet was chosen by director Asghar Farhadi for the role of Lucie because of her similarity with Marion Cotillard, who was going to play her mother in the film. However, Cotillard dropped out because Farhadi always insists on a rehearsal period with his actors before filming, something she could not commit to due to prior engagements.
Asghar Farhadi took 4 months to shoot the film and insisted on 2 months of rehearsals beforehand.
"Samir: When two people see each other after 4 years and still fight together, it shows that there is something unsolved between them."
"Fouad: Why don't they separate her from medical instruments? Samir: Because they don't know if she wants to live with them or die. Fouad: She wants to die. Samir: Why do you say that? Fouad: She wants to die. That's why she committed suicide!"
