In the book on which the film is based, the characters played by Stana Katic and Darby Stanchfield are sisters. On the television series Castle (2009), Katic played Kate Beckett, the wife of Richard Castle, the show's lead character, and Stanchfield played his first ex-wife.
To viewers of Castle (2009), Rachel's line "I don't do guns" is an amusing in-joke to Stana Katic's role as homicide detective Kate Beckett, who not only carried a gun, but was quite adept at using it.
The film's basic, underlying plot point is Rachel's desire to learn how her brother died. In Truth About Kerry (2010), Stana Katic plays a woman of similar single-minded determination trying to find out how her best friend died.
In this film, Jake says to Rachel, "I'm guessing lonely nights... watching Sherlock Holmes on TV with ice cream and flannel PJs.". Raza Jaffrey, who plays Jake, had a recurring role in Elementary (2012), which is a TV show based on Sherlock Holmes.
"Jake Al-Shadi: [lost in the desert] Come on, change of plan. We're walking. Rachel Rozman: Where are we headed? Jake Al-Shadi: I'm Bedouin. I can get us out. Rachel Rozman: With what, your Bedouin radar? Jake Al-Shadi: My birth name is Yakub Al-Shadi. My grandfather lived in a tent. It's in my blood. Rachel Rozman: Jake, you were raised in Ohio. Jake Al-Shadi: I came back in the summers. Rachel Rozman: For what? For Bedouin camp? You have a desk job. You weren't even able to get us out of that market today without a GPS. Jake Al-Shadi: I'm gonna get us out of here. I promise. We'll find some Bedouins or some camels."
"[from trailer] Rachel Rozman: Do you feel like breaking the rules for once? Jake Al-Shadi: Try me."
