New AirPods at iPhone 15 launch event

Apple is reportedly planning to launch new AirPods with a USB-C charging case at its September 12th event. These AirPods with the USB-C charging case will be launched to match with the new iPhones, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (via MacRumors). For those unaware, the iPhone 15 series is highly expected to come with USB-C ports as Apple finally ditches the Lightning port.

As for the new AirPods, the report doesn’t share anything else with regards to its features or any other upgrades. It’s also not specified which model Apple plans to update — AirPods or AirPods Pro. The second-generation AirPods Pro was launched in September 2022 along with the iPhone 14 series, and the AirPods 3 was launched in October 2021. So both models are due for an upgrade.

AirPods Pro with USB-C charging port

This isn’t the first we’re hearing about AirPods with a USB-C charging port. Earlier this year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted that Apple will release the AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C later this year. This was also spotted in the iOS 16.4 developer beta version. Kuo mentions AirPods Pro 2, which suggests that Apple might only upgrade the charging case while rest of the features remain same.

Kuo added that the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 are unlikely to get USB-C version. This suggests that its only the ‘Pro’ model that’s going to get USB-C at the iPhone 15 launch event. All this points out to only the charging case getting refreshed but no other upgrades for the AirPods Pro. But we still have to wait for the official release to find out what Apple has actually planned.
