iOS 18 to bring new generative AI features

  • According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, Apple is planning to launch generative AI features with iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 later this year in June.
  • Apple is working on a large language model (LLM) codenamed ‘Ajax’ internally. The iPhone maker has been testing this LLM since last year.
  • iOS 18 might see AI features such as auto-summarising and auto-completing on native apps including Pages and Keynote.
  • Apple Music will also get more AI functionality that should help create better playlists. It already curates playlists based on the user’s listening history but it should get better on iOS 18.
  • Apple’s digital assistant Siri is also set to get a major overhaul on iOS 18. Details about the new changes and features haven’t been revealed though.
  • A new AI-based system to help AppleCare employees assist customers with troubleshooting is also in the works. Developers are also getting a new version of Xcode and other development tools for AI-based code completion.

These are the features planned for iOS 18 so this time the upgrade is expected to be more AI-focused. We should get to know more about it as we inch closer to WWDC 2024. But this is just the start though, and Apple’s complete AI vision is said to take time until 2025, according to Gurman.

Samsung is also preparing to unveil its AI features at the Galaxy S24 launch. It has already teased ‘Galaxy AI’, and we’ve seen leaks of highly AI-powered features coming to Samsung phones soon.
