Google introduces Back to School offers for students with one year of free Gemini Omni, 400GB storage, and more

Google’s move also highlights a shift in how AI companies are positioning their tools for students. OpenAI, for instance, recently introduced ChatGPT for Teens, with learning-focused features such as Study Mode and stronger safeguards for users aged 13 to 17. While the two offerings target different age groups, both show how AI companies are increasingly building dedicated tools around learning and education rather than relying solely on general-purpose chatbots.

Google’s free AI Plus offer gives it a direct way to put Gemini in front of a large student audience as the new academic year begins. Let’s check out the offer in detail below.

What students get with Google AI Plus

The free student plan gives eligible college students access to Google AI Plus for one year, with Gemini Omni included as part of the package. Google is also offering 2x higher usage limits in Gemini and 400GB of storage.

For students already using Google’s services for college work, the combination could offer more room for storing files while also providing access to Gemini’s AI features without an additional subscription cost.

Students who want more than the free AI Plus plan can also access a discounted bundle combining Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium. Google says the bundle is available at up to 70 percent off, giving students access to Google’s higher-tier AI tools alongside ad-free YouTube content. For students who already use YouTube regularly for lectures, tutorials or entertainment, the bundle could be more appealing than paying separately for an AI subscription and YouTube Premium.

Google has not specified the full eligibility criteria or offer deadline in the announcement, although students can claim the promotion through its dedicated student offer page.

Gemini tools for studying

Google is also introducing new ways for students to use Gemini as a study tool. The Gemini app now has a dedicated student hub that brings together its learning-focused features and helps students organise their studies.

One of the main additions is Study Notebooks, which can use diagnostic quizzes to identify a student’s strengths and knowledge gaps. Gemini can then create bite-sized study plans based on their learning goals, giving students a more structured way to prepare for exams and coursework.

Students can also use Gemini Live to discuss Deep Research reports while on the move. This could make it easier to ask follow-up questions or explore a topic without having to sit through a long report on screen.

Google is bringing several learning-focused tools to Search as well. Students will be able to generate interactive visuals to better understand difficult concepts and take practice quizzes for different subjects, including standardised tests.

The company is also adding step-by-step learning through Google Lens, allowing students to work through concepts using visual search. Additional tools will let students organise projects with notebooks and create custom files to streamline their studies.

Google says these education features are designed with learning science in mind and are intended to support personalised study while keeping teachers in control of the classroom experience.

Should students claim Google’s offer?

For eligible students, the free year of Google AI Plus is the easiest part of the offer to recommend. Gemini Omni, higher usage limits and 400GB of storage can provide decent value even for students who only use AI occasionally for research, coursework or organising files.

The Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium bundle, despite the advertised discount, is a different proposition. At roughly Rs 500 per month, it still adds a recurring cost that may not make sense for every student, particularly those on a tight budget. It is worth considering only for students who already use YouTube heavily and expect to make regular use of the additional Gemini features.

For everyone else, the free AI Plus plan remains a worthwhile offer on its own. Students can take advantage of the additional storage and AI tools without adding another monthly expense, which makes it the more practical option for most users.
