Google Pixel 9 may get ‘Adaptive Touch’ feature to adjust sensitivity automatically

Highlights
  • Google’s ‘Adaptive Touch’ feature could adjust the sensitivity of the touchscreen automatically.
  • The adaptive touch screen has been spotted on Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 labels.
  • Google’s ‘Adaptive Touch’ feature could be similar to OnePlus’ AquaTouch, which debuted on OnePlus 12.

Google might be working on a new Pixel feature dubbed ‘Adaptive Touch’, which, as the name suggests, will adjust the sensitivity of the touchscreen automatically based on a few factors. For a while, Pixels phones allowed users to boost the touchscreen’s sensitivity when a screen protector is applied. The adaptive touch screen has been spotted on Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 labels, which should take the experience to a new level.

Pixels Adaptive Touch feature details

  • The ‘Adaptive Touch’ feature, as spotted by Android Authority, is labelled as a feature for 2024 Pixel devices.
  • This suggests the feature might debut with the Pixel 9 series later this year, probably because of the lack of hardware on the outgoing models.
  • The ‘Adaptive Touch’ feature would adjust the touchscreen sensitivity based on certain factors.

“The touch sensitivity will automatically adjust to your environment, activities and screen protector,” says Google. At the moment, it is not clear how this feature will work but might include an automatic boost similar to the Pixel 8 and be extended to other cases. These cases probably include a wet screen, wearing gloves, or a boost during gaming.

OnePlus introduced the ‘Aqua Touch’ feature on the OnePlus 12, which is supposed to deliver impressive touchscreen response even when the screen is wet. There are chances that Google’s ‘Adaptive Touch’ could be something similar to OnePlus’s Aqua Touch.

It is not clear at the moment whether the ‘Adaptive Touch’ feature will make its way back to current generation models but considering Google has been working on features (For example the Gemini AI which won’t come to Pixel 8) that would be exclusive to newer hardware, there are chances it might not make its way.
