Google launched its first-ever foldable phone in May at its I/O event. Just like any other foldable phone, the Pixel Fold is also expected to be delicate and not as sturdy as its regular counterparts. But Google did claim that the Pixel Fold has the most durable hinge. So how durable is the Pixel Fold? Let’s find out.
Google Pixel Fold durability test
- The Pixel Fold went through JerryRigEverything’s durability test starting with the scratch test. The outer screen which is a 5.8-inch display starts scratching at level six and deeper grooves start showing at level 7.
- The display inside gives up even faster with scratches visible at level two itself. It’s so sensitive that it can’t even withstand fingerprint scratches.
- The sides that are aluminum also scratch easily. The power button on the Pixel Fold which doubles as a fingerprint scanner also scratches easily but it still manages to work fine.
- Moving on to the burn test, the outer screen withstands the flame for 16 seconds until it turns white, and it also did not recover. The display inside was even worse as it not only gave up in eight seconds but the phone shut down.
- This is the first time that a phone has shut down during a burn test. After turning the Pixel Fold back on, a message is displayed saying it shut down due to overheating.

Google Pixel Fold bend test
- Now coming to the bend test which was the highlight of the video. The Pixel Fold manages to fold outward quite easily with the screen giving up almost immediately. Almost the entire screen dies with only the left part slightly visible. It doesn’t fold back properly either after the bend test.
- Bending it even more just ends up breaking the phone almost entirely. JerryRigEverything points out that the hinge is actually staying intact but the rest of the phone is breaking from all sides.
- So looks like Google was right about one thing — the Pixel Fold does have the most durable hinge.
