HP India Gaming Landscape Study 2023 findings

The study involved 3500 respondents (500 of which are parents) from 15 Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities in India. The participants included 70 percent PC users and 30 percent mobile gamers. Also, from a different lens, this included 75 percent male respondents and 25 percent female respondents. Here’s what the report reveals:

  • Income: Compared to the previous year, in 2023, around 50 percent of Indian gamers are earning Rs 6 to 12 lakh per annum.
  • Investment: Big money is pouring in for sponsorships and e-sports tournaments. The support also comes in the form of guidance for gamers in finding career opportunities.
  • Inclusivity and participation: Gaming is found to have spread beyond metro cities and is not limited to any particular demographic. The report mentions “75 percent of GenZ and 67 percent of millennials are serious gamers. As much as 58 percent of women respondents are identified as serious gamers”.

  • Device of choice: Most gamers around 67 percent prefer PCs over mobile phones for their higher FPS and bigger displays. The HP study claims that gamers are also “willing to invest over INR 1 lakh on average for a gaming PC”.
  • Parents’ support: But the most pleasant and encouraging surprise for young boys and girls would be that parents are also increasingly supportive of gaming. About 42 percent approve of gaming as a legitimate hobby and 40 percent agree with the shift in outlook thanks to the growth of the gaming industry in the country.
  • Parents’ concern: Having said that, parents are still not sure about the career stability in this field and they rely on others for gaining information about the gaming industry’s prospects.
  • Gaming education: Even gamers themselves (around 61 percent) are not aware of gaming courses in India even though 75 percent of the respondents are interested in improving their skills through proper training.
